The Audi A3 A/C control computer is a dash-mounted electronic module that combines two functions into one assembly: the user interface (the display, buttons and rotary knobs you touch every day) and the embedded control electronics that read those inputs and command the HVAC actuators behind the dash. The module talks to the body control module over the comfort CAN bus, receives cabin temperature feedback from a sensor (sometimes integrated into the faceplate, sometimes mounted separately), and sends commands to the blower motor, A/C compressor clutch, blend door actuators, and rear defogger.
Inside, the unit has a microprocessor, the LCD or LED display driver, the button matrix decoder, the rotary encoder reader, and the CAN bus transceiver chip. Outside, the faceplate matches the Audi dash aesthetic for the relevant generation, with backlit symbology that matches the rest of the dash illumination.
The three A3 generations use significantly different climate control panel designs. The 8P design from the late 2000s does not fit into the 8V dash from 2015 and beyond, and the 8Y from 2022 onward uses a horizontally integrated layout that is entirely different. The electrical connectors, CAN bus messages and software all differ. An 8P module installed in an 8V or 8Y dash will not fit, will not connect, and will not communicate.

Within each generation, the A3 was offered with either single-zone climate (base trims) or dual-zone Climatronic (higher trims with separate driver and passenger temperature settings). These use different control modules with different part numbers. Even within the same chassis generation, a single-zone module will not function correctly in a dual-zone equipped car (and vice versa) because the wiring harness has a different number of pins and the body computer expects different CAN bus messages.
Identify your current configuration by looking at the existing faceplate. Two separate temperature controls (driver and passenger) means dual-zone Climatronic. A single shared temperature control means single-zone.
