About the Jeep XJ Fender Flares
Fender flares are one of the most visible exterior components on the classic Jeep Cherokee XJ. After 20 to 40 years of service (the XJ ran 1984 to 2001), original flares have typically faded from UV exposure, cracked from off-road duty, lost mounting tabs from impact, or been removed entirely during fender modification for larger tires. Restoring correct OEM appearance starts with matched factory-spec flares.
A verified used Cherokee XJ fender flare set restores correct factory presentation on your classic XJ. We inspect every flare set: surface condition (UV fading severity disclosed honestly), mounting tab integrity, clip engagement points, color uniformity across the set, and flare-to-flare match. Year range and body style (2-door SE vs 4-door) fitment verified before shipping.

About the Jeep Cherokee XJ (1984-2001)
The Revolutionary Unibody SUV
The XJ Cherokee was revolutionary at the time of its 1984 introduction as one of the first SUVs to use unibody construction instead of body-on-frame. This made the XJ lighter, more efficient, and better-handling than competing body-on-frame SUVs while maintaining serious off-road capability. The 17-year production run from 1984 to 2001 saw remarkably few major changes, reflecting how right Jeep got the original design.
Body Styles and Trim Variants
- 2-door SE: entry-level 2-door, common as a budget XJ
- 4-door Classic: base 4-door trim
- 4-door Sport: popular mid-trim
- 4-door Limited: higher trim with leather and equipment
- 4-door Country: higher trim with two-tone paint, body-color or contrasting flares on some applications

Picked up a front pair for my 1992 MJ Comanche. Vaz confirmed XJ Cherokee front flares cross-reference to MJ front, which is exactly right and what I needed. Donor was a 1991 XJ front pair. Color match to my existing rears is close enough. One star off because the matte black has more fade than the photos suggested but applied Solution Finish and they look excellent now. Service was very knowledgeable about the MJ cross-reference.

excellent post, very informative. I wonder why the other specialists of this sector do not notice this. You must continue your writing. I'm confident, you've a huge readers' base already!
My XJ has cut fenders for 33-inch tires. Will OEM flares fit?
Not cleanly. OEM XJ flares require the original unmodified body fender lip with original screw and clip locations intact. If your fenders have been cut or trimmed, OEM flares will not align correctly with the body and may not have mounting points to attach to. Options: (1) repair the body to OEM spec with fiberglass and bodywork (significant labor), (2) install aftermarket pocket-style or extended-coverage flares designed to cover modified fenders (Bushwacker Cut-Out flares are popular for this), or (3) leave modified fenders exposed if the truck is a dedicated off-road rig. Inspect your truck before ordering.
I have a 1990 Cherokee. Will flares from a 1998 Cherokee fit?
Yes typically. Jeep used the same body and flare geometry across the entire XJ Cherokee production from 1984 to 2001. The 17-year single generation had remarkably few mid-cycle body changes. A flare set sourced from any XJ year (1984-2001) of the matching body style (2-door or 4-door) will typically fit your 1990 cleanly. Note: very early (1984-1986) and very late (1997-2001) XJ may have minor push-pin clip style differences, but the flare itself is essentially unchanged.
I have a 1989 MJ Comanche pickup. Will XJ Cherokee flares fit?
Front flares yes, rear flares no. The MJ Comanche pickup (1986-1992) was built on the XJ Cherokee platform and shared the XJ front body sheet metal. Front fender flares are cross-referenceable between XJ Cherokee and MJ Comanche of compatible model years. Rear flares are NOT cross-compatible since the MJ has a pickup bed while the XJ has the SUV body. Call (240) 301-0095 if you have an MJ and we will help you source the right front pair.
Do 2-door and 4-door XJ flares interchange?
Rear flares yes typically, front flares no. The front flares on 2-door XJ differ from 4-door XJ because the 2-door has different front fender geometry. Rear flares cover the rear wheel arch which is the same between 2-door and 4-door. Always specify your body style at time of order.
How do I install Jeep XJ flares?
Installation overview: (1) Remove existing flares by unscrewing screws from inside the fender lip and releasing push-pin clips with a plastic trim tool. (2) Clean the body fender lip thoroughly, removing any old adhesive residue. (3) Inspect push-pin clip points on the body, if push-pin holes are damaged consider drilling for slightly larger clips. (4) Position the new flare against the body and align with screw holes. (5) Start screws by hand to verify thread engagement (plastic does not need much torque). (6) Push push-pin clips into body holes until they snap. (7) Verify gap consistency between flare and body around the entire arch. Total time 30 to 90 minutes for a full set. New push-pin clips often needed (these are typically the failure point on classic XJ flare installation).
My XJ flares are faded but otherwise good. Can I restore them?
Yes, several options. (1) Solution Finish Trim Restorer is a popular permanent restoration product specifically formulated for matte black exterior trim. (2) Forever Black is another option. (3) Aerosol black trim paint as a temporary restoration (typically lasts 6 to 18 months before re-fading). (4) Used flare replacement (this listing) if your existing flares are damaged beyond cosmetic restoration. Many XJ owners maintain their flares with periodic trim restorer application to keep the factory matte black finish looking fresh.
Are these authentic OEM flares or aftermarket?
These are authentic OEM original equipment flares sourced from donor XJ Cherokee vehicles. We do not sell aftermarket reproduction flares on this listing. Authentic OEM provides factory-correct geometry and the matte black textured finish that matches your existing body trim. If you want aftermarket flares (Bushwacker pocket-style, Rugged Ridge, MOPAR replacement aftermarket), those are different products.
How does shipping work?
Free shipping to all 50 US states. A full XJ flare set weighs 5 to 9 lbs and ships in a medium-large box (typically 36 x 24 x 16 inches). UPS or FedEx Ground. Typical transit is 5 to 10 business days. Each flare is wrapped to prevent transit damage.
