The Mercury Capri is a nameplate with a particularly interesting history in the US market. The Mark I Capri sold from 1970 through 1977 was not built in the US at all, it was the European market Ford Capri imported through Lincoln Mercury dealers as Ford's answer to the Mustang in Europe. The Mark I featured a long hood / short deck pony car profile, was offered with a range of European built inline 4 and V6 engines, and developed a strong enthusiast following on both sides of the Atlantic. A second Mercury Capri (Mark II) launched on the Fox body platform 1979 to 1986 as a Mustang sibling, and a third generation (Mark III) appeared 1991 to 1994 as a Mazda based Australian built convertible.
