About the Geo Prizm Tie Rod

Geo Prizm (1989-1997) was a rebadged Toyota Corolla produced at NUMMI joint venture (Fremont CA, GM-Toyota partnership 1984-2010). Famous for bringing Toyota Production System to US manufacturing. After Geo brand discontinued 1998, continued as Chevy Prizm 1998-2002. NUMMI plant later became Tesla facility.

Three generations: E90 (1989-1992), E100 (1993-1997, last Geo era), E110 (1998-2002 Chevy era). Toyota Corolla sibling sold simultaneously through Toyota dealers - same NUMMI vehicle different badge.

Tie rod is critical steering safety component. Inner tie rod (threaded into steering rack, ball joint to outer) and outer tie rod end (threaded adjuster, ball joint to wheel hub). Wheel alignment ALWAYS required after replacement. Cross-reference Toyota Corolla (US sibling, same NUMMI production).

Replaced outer tie rod end on driver side of my 1995 Geo Prizm (E100 chassis with 1.6L Toyota engine) after the boot tore and ball joint developed play. Vaz confirmed Geo brand context (NUMMI rebadge of Toyota Corolla) and sourced from a 1996 Toyota Corolla AE101 donor (US sibling cross-reference - same NUMMI production). No ball joint play, boot intact, threads clean. Installed at my mechanic with proper alignment after. Steering tight again. The NUMMI joint venture history context was educatio

Bought passenger-side inner tie rod for my 2001 Chevy Prizm (E110 chassis, post-Geo brand discontinuation era). Vaz emphasized the Geo-to-Chevy brand transition 1998 and that my Chevy Prizm is the same vehicle as late Geo Prizm and Toyota Corolla AE111. Sourced from a 2002 Toyota Corolla donor (same NUMMI vehicle). One star off because inner tie rod replacement was more complex than the outer I did previously - needed special tool I had to rent. The cross-reference flexibility (Geo/Chevy/Toyota

What was NUMMI and why does it matter for my Geo Prizm?
NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing Inc) was a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota that operated in Fremont California from 1984-2010. It produced Geo/Chevy Prizm and Toyota Corolla on the same assembly line - same vehicles with different badging. NUMMI was significant because it brought the Toyota Production System (lean manufacturing, just-in-time, kaizen, etc.) to US manufacturing for the first time. The Geo Prizm and Toyota Corolla from NUMMI shared the high-quality Toyota engineering with manufacturing efficiencies. After joint venture ended 2010, the NUMMI plant became Tesla Motors' main facility. Your Geo Prizm benefits from Toyota engineering quality.
