The Toyota 1HZ is one of the most legendary diesel engines in automotive history. Introduced in 1990 to replace the 2H diesel in the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 and 80 Series, it has been in continuous production for over 35 years and still powers new 70 Series Land Cruisers in markets with relaxed emissions regulations. No modern diesel engine- with its variable-geometry turbos, piezoelectric injectors, and multiple control modules- has approached the 1HZ's reputation for reliability in genuinely remote and hostile environments.
The foundation of the 1HZ's durability is its deliberate simplicity. The entire block and cylinder head are cast iron- no aluminum components in the core structure. The fuel injection is entirely mechanical- no ECU required for the engine to operate. Wet cylinder liners can be replaced during a field rebuild without replacing the block. The 7-bearing crankshaft with 12 counterweights runs with exceptional smoothness for a naturally aspirated diesel of this displacement. In fleet applications including mining trucks, military vehicles, and humanitarian organization fleets across Africa and the Middle East, the 1HZ has documented service lives exceeding 500,000 km before requiring major overhaul.
In its naturally aspirated form the 1HZ produces 129 hp and 210 lb-ft of torque. These numbers are modest by modern standards but entirely appropriate for a 300 kg cast iron diesel inline-six. The torque arrives at 2,200 rpm and the engine is happiest operating between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm. The 1HZ was never intended to be fast- it was designed to start reliably at minus 30 degrees Celsius, pull heavy loads up steep grades, and keep running indefinitely with regular oil changes and a timing belt replacement every 100,000 km.
The 1HZ sits within a broader Toyota HZ diesel family:
| Engine | Configuration | Displacement | HP | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1HZ | Inline-6, NA diesel | 4,163 cc | 129 hp | This engine. Fully mechanical injection. No turbo. All cast iron. The definitive naturally aspirated Land Cruiser diesel. |
| 1HD-T | Inline-6, turbo diesel | 4,163 cc | 170 hp | Turbocharged version. Same block and crankshaft as 1HZ. Direct injection (not indirect). More complex. |
| 1HD-FT | Inline-6, turbo diesel + intercooler | 4,163 cc | 204 hp | Intercooled version of 1HD-T. Better performance and efficiency. |
| 1PZ | Inline-5, NA diesel | 3,469 cc | 112 hp | 5-cylinder variant of the HZ family. Used in smaller Land Cruiser applications. |
| INCLUDED- Long Block | Cast iron block with wet cylinder liners, crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, SOHC camshaft, cast iron cylinder head, valve train, oil pan, timing cover, and water pump where present. |
|---|---|
| NOT INCLUDED | Mechanical injection pump (confirm- may or may not be present), injectors, glow plugs, exhaust manifold, intake manifold, alternator, starter, flywheel, and cooling system components. |
| Injection Pump Note | The mechanical injection pump is a major serviceable component. We confirm whether it is present and note its apparent condition before shipping. |
| Core Note | No core charge. You are not required to return your old engine. |
The Toyota 1HZ was factory installed in the following vehicles:
| Toyota Land Cruiser 75 and 78 Series (Troop Carrier) | 1990 to 2007 |
|---|---|
| Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series | 1990 to present (some markets) |
| Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series (HZJ80) | 1990 to 1998- in non-turbocharged markets |
| Toyota Land Cruiser 105 Series | 1998 to 2007- in non-turbocharged markets |
| Toyota Coaster Bus (HZB30/HZB40) | 1993 to present- in some markets |
| Toyota HiLux (select markets) | Some international market applications |
The 1HZ is occasionally used in swap applications by overland and expedition builders who want the 1HZ's extreme reliability and mechanical simplicity in a non-Land Cruiser chassis. The engine's fully mechanical nature and compact injection pump make it adaptable to applications without engine management systems. Call (240) 301-0095 with your specific project and we will advise on fitment.
Transmission compatibility: H150F 5-speed manual- standard 70 and 80 Series Land Cruiser pairing | H55F 5-speed manual- earlier applications | The 1HZ was never paired with an automatic transmission in factory configuration. All 1HZ Land Cruisers are manual transmission vehicles.

Used OEM vs Rebuilt- Which Is Right for You?
Used OEM is the right choice for a Land Cruiser 70 or 80 Series 1HZ replacement. The engine's long documented service life means a tested unit with solid compression and verified prechamber condition is the practical foundation for another 200,000 km or more.
A specialist rebuild makes sense for a Land Cruiser that will see extremely demanding use- mining, overland expedition, or military/humanitarian fleet. 1HZ rebuild specialists can fit new wet liners, recondition the head and prechambers, and deliver an engine with known-new tolerances. Call us and we can advise on current unit condition.
Mileage varies by unit. Where available from the donor vehicle we provide it. Where it cannot be confirmed, we disclose this before your order is placed.

Finding a tested 1HZ for my HZJ80 in North America was a serious challenge. Vaz assessed the prechamber condition and compression before shipping- all 6 came back 3.4 to 3.5 MPa which is solid. They inspected the coolant for contamination and found it clean. Replaced the timing belt and cooling system at installation. Land Cruiser has been running flawlessly since.
Replaced a 1HZ that had suffered a prechamber crack. Vaz specifically checked the prechamber and coolant condition on the replacement before shipping. One glow plug was identified as suspect- disclosed before I bought and replaced at installation for $15. Engine runs strong and the coolant stays clean.
