Description
About the Used 6.1 Hemi Engine
Discover the ultimate naturally-aspirated Hemi power with the 6.1 Hemi engine for sale. This 6.1 Hemi is the original SRT8 powerplant, packing 425 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque to deliver the performance that made the Charger SRT8, Magnum SRT8, Challenger SRT8, 300C SRT8, and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 some of the most celebrated modern American muscle cars of the 2005 to 2010 era. Built with a robust cast iron block and lightweight aluminum heads, it’s engineered for strength, durability, and the high-RPM operation needed to make 425 hp from 6.1 liters of displacement.
The 6.1 Hemi features a high-performance camshaft with aggressive lift and duration, larger intake and exhaust valves than the 5.7 Hemi, and a higher 10.3:1 compression ratio. Sequential multi-port fuel injection ensures precise fuel delivery, while the iconic Hemi spherical combustion chamber provides excellent flame propagation across the bore. Ideal for SRT8 restorers, modern muscle car enthusiasts, swap project builders, and insurance-totaled SRT8 repower applications, this engine offers a perfect blend of raw naturally-aspirated power and modern reliability.
Don‘t settle for ordinary, elevate your ride with the legendary 6.1 SRT8 Hemi engine. Available now for those who demand authentic Mopar SRT8 performance.

6.1 Hemi vs Other Modern Hemi Variants
| 5.7 Hemi (NA) | 345 hp / 390 hp variants. Standard truck and Charger / Challenger R/T engine. Most common Hemi. Lower-stress design. |
|---|---|
| 6.1 Hemi SRT8 | 425 hp at 6,200 rpm, 420 lb-ft. The original SRT8 engine sold on this page. 2005 to 2010 production. |
| 6.4 Hemi (392) | 470 to 485 hp depending on application. Replaced the 6.1 in 2011. Larger displacement, revised heads. |
| 6.2 Hellcat (Supercharged) | 707 to 717 hp depending on year. Supercharged. Different architecture, not a 6.1 successor. |
Signs You Need a Replacement 6.1 Hemi
- Lifter tick or rattle (a known modern Hemi issue, particularly on aged units)
- Loss of compression on one or more cylinders
- Hemi tick (different from lifter tick, related to exhaust manifold studs or rocker arm wear)
- Knock under load (rod or main bearing wear on high-mileage units)
- Excessive oil consumption beyond factory spec
- Coolant in oil or oil in coolant (head gasket failure)
- Spark plug ejection or thread damage (Mopar Hemi family is prone to plug thread issues on aged engines)
- Engine seized in donor SRT8
- SRT8 build project (E36 swap, RWD swap, restored Charger SRT8 wreck recovery)
Known 6.1 Hemi Issues We Inspect Before Shipping
- Lifter tick / failure: A well-documented modern Hemi issue, particularly on engines run with extended oil change intervals. We listen for lifter tick and inspect cam lobe condition.
- Multi-Displacement System (MDS) wear: Note: The 6.1 SRT8 Hemi did NOT include MDS (cylinder deactivation), unlike the 5.7 and 6.4. This is a benefit for SRT8 buyers, no MDS lifter wear concerns.
- Spark plug thread damage: The Mopar Hemi has 2 plugs per cylinder (16 total). Aged engines can develop thread damage during plug replacement. We inspect plug thread integrity.
- Exhaust manifold stud / bolt failure: Common on aged Hemi engines, often the source of a “Hemi tick” sound. We inspect manifold mounting integrity.
- Cooling system passages: Inspected for corrosion and contamination.
- **Compression on all 8 cylinders, the leading indicator of overall internal condition.

Vehicle Compatibility
The 6.1 SRT8 Hemi was a direct fit in the following vehicles:
| Dodge Charger SRT8 | 2006 to 2010 |
|---|---|
| Dodge Magnum SRT8 | 2006 to 2008 |
| Dodge Challenger SRT8 | 2008 to 2010 |
| Chrysler 300C SRT8 | 2005 to 2010 |
| Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 (WK) | 2006 to 2010 |
| Chrysler 300 SRT Design (limited markets) | Limited applications |
NOT compatible without significant work with: 5.7 Hemi applications (Charger R/T, Challenger R/T, Ram 1500, etc., uses different cam and lower-output tune), 6.4 / 392 Hemi (post-2011 SRT8 vehicles), Hellcat 6.2 supercharged applications, or non-LX/LC/WK platform vehicles.
Common 6.1 swap applications: Older Mopar muscle car restorations (Challenger, Dart, Coronet) for modern Hemi swaps, custom builds, and insurance-totaled SRT8 wreck recovery for transferring the engine to a similar chassis. Mopar Performance and aftermarket suppliers offer swap kits.
Transmission compatibility: Mopar NAG1 (W5A580) 5-speed automatic, the standard SRT8 transmission | 545RFE 5-speed automatic, some applications | 65RFE 6-speed automatic, late 6.1 applications | TR-6060 6-speed manual, Challenger SRT8 manual variants.
Condition and Inspection
Every used 6.1 Hemi we ship goes through this process:
