Description
About This Transmission
The ZF6 is a German-built 6 speed fully synchronized manual transmission produced by ZF Friedrichshafen and used in Ford Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 trucks from 1999 through 2010. It replaced the ZF5 5-speed in Ford diesel truck applications, bringing a true granny low first gear (5.79:1 vs the ZF5's 4.14:1), an additional overdrive 6th gear (0.72:1), and- most importantly for sustained towing- an internal gear-driven oil pump that circulates gear oil to an external oil cooler.
The granny low gear is the ZF6's defining feature for most buyers. At 5.79:1 in first gear, the ZF6 can move a heavily loaded trailer at a true walking pace, something the ZF5 could not achieve. Combined with the diesel's torque curve, this makes the ZF6-equipped Super Duty one of the most capable towing trucks ever produced with a manual transmission.
The ZF6 was also used in GM's HD truck lineup (Silverado 2500HD and 3500, Sierra 2500HD and 3500) from 2001 to 2006, where GM made modifications to reduce shift noise. The Ford and GM versions are different internally and have different bellhousing patterns- we confirm the application-specific variant before every order ships.
Signs You Need a Replacement Transmission
- Grinding when selecting 1st gear (granny low) from a stop- 1st gear synchronizer wear. Note that the granny gear requires a deliberate engagement and should not be selected while moving.
- Gear popping out of 5th or 6th under light load- worn detent springs or synchronizer rings on the most-used gears for highway driving
- Difficulty finding reverse- reverse synchronizer wear or linkage adjustment
- Whining or bearing noise that increases with vehicle speed- input shaft or output shaft bearing wear
- Transmission overheating during sustained towing- external oil cooler blockage. The ZF6 oil cooler must be serviced when replacing the transmission.
- Gear oil discoloration to milky or metallic silver- water or metal contamination indicating internal damage
Known Problems With This Transmission
- External oil cooler system- most overlooked ZF6 service item: The ZF6 has an internal pump that circulates gear oil to an external cooler mounted near the transmission. Most buyers installing a used ZF6 fail to flush or inspect the external cooler lines and cooler core. Old degraded or contaminated fluid in the cooler contaminates the new transmission immediately. We flag the external cooler service requirement on every order.
- Bellhousing variant differences: The ZF6 uses different bellhousing configurations depending on the engine application. The 7.3L Power Stroke bellhousing is different from the 6.0L and 6.4L Power Stroke configurations, which differs again from the 5.4L and 6.8L gas engine configurations. We confirm bellhousing variant before every order.
- Gas engine mounting ear cracking: The gas engine version (5.4L/6.8L Triton application) ZF6 is known for casting issues around the transmission mounting ears. We inspect and note mounting ear condition before shipping gas-application units.
- Shift fork wear on high-mileage units: The 5th and 6th gear shift forks on high-mileage ZF6 transmissions can wear, causing difficulty staying in gear under light throttle. We specifically test 5th and 6th gear engagement under simulated load before shipping.
- S6-650 vs S6-750 for 6.4 Power Stroke: The 2008 to 2010 6.4L Power Stroke required the heavier-duty S6-750 variant rated at 560 lb-ft vs the S6-650's 520 lb-ft. Using an S6-650 behind a 6.4 Stroker will result in premature failure. We confirm variant before every order.
ZF6 Variants by Application and Engine
Bellhousing configuration and torque rating vary by engine application:
| Application | Years | Torque Rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford 7.3L Power Stroke | 1999 to 2003 | 520 lb-ft (S6-650) | First ZF6 application. Same bellhousing pattern as 7.3/6.9 IDI ZF5. |
| Ford 6.0L Power Stroke | 2003 to 2007 | 520 lb-ft (S6-650) | Different, larger bellhousing than 7.3 version. Confirm application before ordering. |
| Ford 6.4L Power Stroke | 2008 to 2010 | 560 lb-ft (S6-750) | Requires heavier-duty S6-750. DO NOT use S6-650 behind a 6.4 Power Stroke. |
| Ford 5.4L/6.8L Gas V8/V10 | 2002 to 2010 | 520 lb-ft (S6-650) | Same bellhousing as 6.0/6.4 automatic variants. Known for mounting ear cracking. |
| GM Silverado/Sierra 2500HD/3500 | 2001 to 2006 | 520 lb-ft (S6-650) | GM-modified version. Different bellhousing and shift linkage from Ford version. Not interchangeable with Ford ZF6. |

Vehicle Compatibility
The ZF6 was factory installed in the following trucks:
| Ford F-250 Super Duty | 1999 to 2010- diesel and gas V10 applications |
|---|---|
| Ford F-350 Super Duty | 1999 to 2010- diesel and gas V10 applications |
| Ford F-450 and F-550 Super Duty | 2000 to 2010- select applications |
| Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500 | 2001 to 2006 (GM-modified version- different bellhousing from Ford) |
| GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500 | 2001 to 2006 (GM-modified version) |
The Ford and GM versions of the ZF6 are NOT interchangeable. Each uses different bellhousing bolt patterns and shift linkage. Within Ford applications, the 7.3L Power Stroke bellhousing is different from the 6.0/6.4 Power Stroke and gas V8/V10 applications. Always confirm your specific engine before ordering. Call (240) 301-0095 with your exact year, engine, and 2WD or 4WD configuration.
Transmission compatibility: Replaced the ZF5 5-speed in Ford diesel truck applications starting with the 1999 Super Duty. The ZF6 was itself replaced by the Tremec TR-4050 in some Ford applications from 2011 onward.

Used OEM vs Rebuilt- Which Is Right for You?
Used OEM is the right choice for an F-250 or F-350 Super Duty replacement where a gear-tested, variant-confirmed unit is needed at a fraction of rebuild cost. Our units are tested with bellhousing variant, oil cooler condition, and all 6 gears verified before shipping.
A rebuilt ZF6 from a Ford diesel specialist makes sense for high-output builds pushing torque above 520 lb-ft or for buyers wanting full-length warranty coverage. ZF6 rebuilds typically run $2,000 to $4,000 or more. Call us to discuss options.
Condition and Inspection Process
- Gear engagement test through all 6 forward gears and reverse- 5th and 6th tested specifically for stay-in-gear under simulated load
- Granny low (1st gear) engagement specifically verified
- External oil cooler system inspected- lines and cooler condition noted and disclosed before shipping
- Bellhousing variant confirmed- 7.3, 6.0/6.4, or gas V8/V10 identified before every order
- S6-650 vs S6-750 confirmed- critical for 6.4 Power Stroke buyers
- Case and mounting ear inspection- gas-application units specifically checked for ear cracking
- Fluid inspection for metal contamination or milky appearance indicating water ingestion
Mileage varies by unit. Where available from the donor vehicle we provide it. Where mileage cannot be confirmed, we disclose this before your order is placed.
Buyer Tips- What to Know Before You Order
- Service the external oil cooler- not optional: When installing a ZF6, flush or replace the external oil cooler and all cooler lines before filling with new fluid. Contaminated fluid in the old cooler will immediately contaminate the new transmission. This is the most common mistake made when installing a used ZF6.
- Fluid type matters: Use ZF-approved full synthetic manual transmission fluid (Pentosin FFL-2 or equivalent). Do NOT use ATF, conventional gear oil, or GL-5 gear oil. The synchronizer materials are incompatible with these fluids.
- Bellhousing match- critical: Confirm your engine application before ordering. 7.3 Power Stroke, 6.0/6.4 Power Stroke, and gas V8/V10 applications use different bellhousing bolt patterns. We verify this before shipping but confirm it yourself.
- 6.4 Power Stroke buyers- you need the S6-750: The 6.4L Power Stroke requires the heavier-duty S6-750 rated at 560 lb-ft. An S6-650 will not survive behind a stock 6.4 Stroker, let alone a tuned one. Confirm the variant before ordering.
- Granny gear engagement technique: The ZF6's 1st gear (granny low at 5.79:1) should be engaged from a complete stop. It is not intended for shifting into while moving. Many drivers skip 1st entirely under normal driving and start from 2nd- this is normal driving behavior for the ZF6.

Bought a ZF6 for my 7.3 F-250. Vaz confirmed the 7.3 bellhousing pattern and tested all 6 gears including the granny low. Granny engages cleanly. One minor seep at the rear output seal- disclosed before shipping and addressed with a new seal at installation. Transmission shifts great. Good experience.
