Description
About This Engine
The 4.6L Triton is the most widely produced engine in Ford's modular V8 family, made from 1991 to 2014 across passenger cars, full-size trucks, performance Mustangs, and luxury sedans. It produced as little as 215 horsepower in early F-150 base trim and as much as 390 horsepower in the Mach 1 4V DOHC, all from the same 281 cubic inch displacement. The aluminum (or iron, in truck applications) block uses 90 millimeter bore and 90 millimeter stroke, near-square geometry that gives the 4.6 Triton its smooth power delivery and high-RPM willingness.
Three Cylinder Head Variants You Must Know Before Ordering
The 4.6 Triton came in three distinct cylinder head designs that affect both power output and parts compatibility. 2V uses two valves per cylinder with a single overhead cam, found on base F-150, base Mustang GT (1996 to 2004), Crown Victoria, Town Car, and Grand Marquis. 3V adds a third valve and Variable Cam Timing, found on later F-150 (2005 to 2010), Mustang GT (2005 to 2010), and Explorer V8. 4V DOHC uses four valves per cylinder with dual overhead cams, found on Mustang Cobra, Mach 1, Bullitt, Lincoln Mark VIII, and Mercury Marauder. Always specify the variant when ordering.
Why Ford Owners Choose a Used 4.6 Triton
The 4.6 Triton is one of the most-supported V8 engines in the aftermarket, and clean used cores are widely available because Ford built millions of them. For F-150 owners, Crown Vic restorers, Mustang GT builders, and Town Car maintainers, a tested used unit costs less than half of a remanufactured long block while delivering excellent service life when properly inspected.
Signs You Need a Replacement 4.6L Triton
- Spark plug blow-out with damaged threads (the famous 2V and 3V issue), critical inspection point
- Timing chain rattle on cold start, tensioner failure (common past 100,000 miles)
- Knock or rattle under load, rod or main bearing wear
- Coolant in oil, intake manifold gasket failure (early aluminum manifolds)
- Misfire codes from one or more cylinders, head gasket or valve seat failure
- Loss of power on 3V engines with VCT codes, cam phaser wear
- Low oil pressure, oil pump or main bearing wear
Known 4.6L Triton Issues We Inspect Before Shipping
- Spark plug thread condition, the most common 2V and 3V failure point (we test thread integrity)
- Timing chain tensioner operation, wear is normal past 100,000 miles
- Cam phaser operation on 3V variants, VCT-related codes
- Intake manifold (early units had cracking issues with original plastic manifold)
- Block casting numbers and date code documented
- Variant (2V / 3V / 4V) confirmed and photographed for every order

Transmission pairings: Ford 4R70W and 4R75W 4-speed automatic (most cars and trucks), 5R55E 5-speed automatic (Explorer), Tremec T-45 and TR-3650 5-speed manual (Mustang), Tremec T-56 6-speed manual (Cobra and Mach 1). Tell us your transmission for confirmation.
Not sure if this fits? Call (240) 301-0095 with your year, make, model, trim, and transmission. Critical for the 4.6 Triton: tell us whether your vehicle uses 2V, 3V, or 4V DOHC heads. The three variants share a block but have completely different heads, intakes, accessory drives, and ECU calibrations.
Every used 4.6L Triton we ship goes through this process:
- Compression test across all 8 cylinders, pressure per cylinder recorded
- Spark plug thread integrity tested, the critical 2V and 3V wear point
- Timing chain tensioner operation verified
- Cam phaser operation tested on 3V variants
- Visual inspection of block deck, head surfaces, oil galleries
- Variant (2V / 3V / 4V) photographed and confirmed
- Year, casting numbers, donor mileage documented when available
Mileage varies by donor unit. Where verified mileage is available, it is shared. Where mileage cannot be confirmed, we disclose openly before payment. Full inspection notes available on request.

Needed a 3V Triton for my F-150 after a coolant loss event. Vaz confirmed the 3V variant, ran compression, tested cam phaser operation, tested plug threads. All numbers were strong. Crated freight arrived without damage. Truck is back hauling my fifth wheel three months later.

Got a used Triton 4.6L through Vaz Auto Solutions. Smooth runner with a nice growl. Not as powerful as the 5.4, but more than enough for my needs. Keep an eye on the timing chain tensioners. Good bang for your buck.

Picked up a 4.6L Triton from Vaz Auto Solutions for my F-150. Solid engine, good power for everyday use. Watch out for spark plug issues, but overall reliable. Decent fuel economy for a V8.
Russ J., Sacramento CA –
Original 2V started knocking at 165,000 miles. Vaz had a clean 2V with verified compression and confirmed spark plug threads. Year and casting matched my Mustang. Install was textbook, no surprises. Mustang runs and pulls like new and my mechanic was impressed with the visible condition of the donor unit.
