About This Engine
The Lamborghini V12 is one of the longest-running naturally aspirated V12 programs in automotive history. The first version was designed by Giotto Bizzarrini and entered production in 1963 at 3.5 liters for the Lamborghini 350GT. Over 47 years it grew to 6.5 liters in the final Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce – with each generation delivering dramatically increasing output while maintaining the fundamental 60-degree V12 DOHC architecture.
For the 2011 Aventador, Lamborghini chose to design an entirely new engine from a blank sheet. The L539, while sharing the same 6.5-liter displacement and 60-degree V12 layout as its predecessor, uses entirely different bore and stroke dimensions – 95mm bore by 76.4mm stroke in an oversquare configuration. The L539 debuted with 700 hp and was progressively developed to 770 hp in the Aventador SVJ. The two generations share no internal components.
Whether you need a replacement for a Murcielago, Aventador, or earlier Diablo, we document the exact engine generation, displacement variant, and application model before every unit ships.
Signs You Need a Replacement Engine
- Significant oil consumption above manufacturer specification – internal sealing deterioration on high-mileage exotic engines
- Rough idle or misfiring not resolved by basic service – oiling system or injector issue
- Overheating under sustained performance driving – cooling system deterioration
- Unusual mechanical knock under load – bearing or valve train issue
- ECU fault codes specific to individual cylinders – misfire detection
Known Problems With This Engine
- Dry sump system maintenance: Both Murcielago and Aventador engines use dry sump oiling. Neglected dry sump systems are a primary cause of bearing failure. We inspect all accessible external oiling components before shipping.
- Variable valve timing actuator wear on L539 Aventador: The VVT system can develop wear on high-mileage units causing fault codes and rough running. We note any related fault history where documentation exists.
- Generation compatibility: Murcielago first-generation V12 and Aventador L539 share no interchangeable components. They require different transmissions, engine mounts, electronics, and supporting systems. Confirm your exact vehicle model before ordering.
- High-mileage exotic service intervals: These engines require strict adherence to oil change intervals and manufacturer-specified lubricants. Many used examples show evidence of extended service intervals.
Lamborghini V12 Generations and Variants
The V12 covers two distinct engine families across almost 50 years of production. First Gen Diablo (1990-2001): 5.7L to 6.0L producing 485 to 550 hp. First Gen Murcielago (2001-2010): 6.2L to 6.5L producing 580 to 670 hp – LP640 made 640 hp, LP670 SV made 670 hp (final first-generation engine). L539 Aventador LP700: 6.5L 700 hp – new clean-sheet design, 95mm x 76.4mm oversquare, 8,250 rpm redline. L539 Aventador LP750 SV: 6.5L 750 hp track-focused with titanium intake valves. L539 Aventador SVJ: 6.5L 770 hp – highest production output with ALA active aerodynamics.
What Is Included
Included: Long block engine assembly as removed from donor vehicle. Specific accessories confirmed before shipping. Not Included: Transmission, dry sump tank, oil lines, intake systems, exhaust, ECU, wiring harness, and ancillary accessories. No core charge.
Vehicle Compatibility – Direct Fit
The Lamborghini V12 family was used in the Lamborghini 350GT and 400GT (1963-1968, 3.5L and 4.0L), Espada and Countach (1968-1990), Diablo (1990-2001, 5.7L to 6.0L), Murcielago (2001-2010, 6.2L to 6.5L up to 670 hp), and Aventador LP700 through SVJ (2011-2022, L539 6.5L, 700 to 770 hp). Due to unique drivetrain architecture per model, these engines are not straightforward swap candidates – each generation requires the corresponding transmission, ECU, dry sump system, and complete engine management from the same application.

Needed a replacement LP640 V12 for my Lamborghini Murcielago. Vaz confirmed the first-generation vs L539 distinction upfront – that told me they understand these cars. Engine arrived well protected on a reinforced pallet. My Lamborghini shop confirmed the block is in excellent condition. Outstanding service.

Bought an L539 unit for my Lamborghini Aventador LP700 repair. Vaz documented the engine code and confirmed the LP700 variant before shipping. Arrived professionally packaged. My Lamborghini specialist confirmed it checks out. They were upfront that mileage could not be confirmed from records – appreciated the honesty.
