Description
BMW M1 Column Switch for Sale, Authentic Original Equipment for the Rarest BMW Production Car
The BMW M1 is one of the rarest production BMWs ever built, with only 453 units worldwide across the 1978 to 1981 production run. As an owner of one of these collector cars, finding authentic original equipment parts is the single biggest restoration challenge. New BMW parts have been unavailable for the M1 for over 40 years. Aftermarket reproductions essentially do not exist due to the low production volume. The realistic path to keeping an M1 running and presenting correctly is verified used original equipment parts, including parts that cross-reference from other BMW models of the same era which used common parts bin components.
A verified used BMW M1 column switch restores authentic stalk feel and full electrical function to your M1’s steering column. We bench-test every function: stalk action, detent engagement, auto-cancel, all turn signal and wiper positions, connector pin condition.
Get your M1 back to factory original presentation with a tested authentic period column switch today.
Product Overview
The BMW M1 column switch is a multifunction stalk-style switch assembly that mounts to the steering column just under the steering wheel. The left stalk handles turn signal activation (left, right, and auto-cancel on steering wheel return), headlight flash function (push toward driver from off position), and high beam toggle. The right stalk handles wiper speed selection (off, intermittent, low speed, high speed) and washer push-button activation.
Internally, the switch uses spring-loaded detent mechanisms that snap the stalks into defined positions, providing the characteristic click-feel of a vintage BMW column switch. Multi-pin connectors at the base of the switch interface with the steering column wiring harness.

Parts Bin Cross-Reference Coverage
BMW used common parts bin components for many M1 interior electrical switches, which expands sourcing options for M1 owners significantly. The column switch in particular typically cross-references to other BMW models of the same era:
BMW E12 5-Series: 1972 to 1981 production, including 528i, 530i, 524td and M535i variants
BMW E24 6-Series early production: 1976 to 1982 production, including 628CSi, 630CS, 633CSi and early 635CSi
BMW E23 7-Series early production: 1977 to 1986 production, including 728i, 730, 732i, 733i, 735i and 745i (European turbo)
BMW E21 3-Series: 1975 to 1983 production, similar stalk design in many production years
A column switch sourced from any of these cross-referenced BMW donor cars is functionally identical to an M1-sourced switch, since they share the BMW parts bin. We will disclose the donor source at the time of order so you know what you are receiving.

Headlight flash or high beam does not toggle reliably
Visible cracks or damage to the stalk plastic

Restoring an M1 chassis number in the early 100s. Original column switch had a dead high beam circuit and a worn detent. Vaz had a verified working switch in stock sourced from a donor E12 M535i, same SWF part as the M1 used. Stalk action is crisp, all functions verified before shipping. Installed during column rebuild. Hard to overstate how rare M1 parts sourcing is, and Vaz handled it with knowledge and care. Will be back for the M1 restoration ahead.

Picked up a switch as a service spare for my 1979 M1. Vaz disclosed it was sourced from an E24 633CSi donor and confirmed cross-reference fitment in advance. Switch arrived clean, all detents work, auto-cancel tested fine. One star off because the plastic on one corner has minor surface wear that is consistent with a 45-year-old part but slightly more visible than I expected. Functionally everything is right. Realistic option for keeping these collector cars on the road.

The BMW M1 Column Switch from Vaz Auto Solutions is a solid replacement part. It fits well and functions as expected. Installation was straightforward, though the instructions could be more detailed. The quality seems on par with the original. Vaz’s customer service was responsive when I had questions. While it’s not revolutionary, it gets the job done without any fuss.
