Description

About the Chrysler Lebaron HVAC Actuator

Direct fit Chrysler LeBaron all generations 1977-1995. Three distinct eras: M-body 1977-1981 (full-size RWD V8 luxury, sister to Dodge Diplomat/Plymouth Gran Fury), K-body 1982-1988 (famous K-car compact FWD that saved Chrysler from bankruptcy), J-body 1987-1995 (iconic LeBaron Convertible and GTC performance variant).

LeBaron name discontinued after 1995, replaced by Sebring in coupe/convertible lineup. HVAC actuator = blend door actuator that controls temperature mix by positioning blend door between heater core (hot) and AC evaporator (cold) air streams.

Two actuator types: early vacuum diaphragm (older M-body), later electric motor with plastic reduction gears (most K-body and J-body). Common failure: STRIPPED PLASTIC GEARS most common (clicking/grinding sounds behind dash). Tested for smooth operation, gear integrity, motor function.

2 reviews for Chrysler Lebaron HVAC Actuator for Sale | Multi-generation blend door actuator

  1. Theodoros Kapodistrias-Panagiotopoulos

Replaced HVAC blend door actuator on my 1992 Chrysler LeBaron Convertible (J-body, 3.0L Mitsubishi V6). Classic stripped-gear symptom – I could hear the motor clicking behind the dashboard but no temperature change occurring. Vaz educated me on the J-body LeBaron context (iconic convertible era) and the stripped plastic gear common failure mode at 30+ years old. Sourced electric actuator from 1993 LeBaron Convertible donor. Gear integrity verified, motor tested. Installation took about 90 minute

  2. Reinhilde Hartmann-Vogelsang

Bought HVAC actuator for my 1985 Chrysler LeBaron Town and Country wagon (K-body, 2.6L Mitsubishi engine, K-car platform). Vaz emphasized the K-body era context (Lee Iacocca K-cars that saved Chrysler from bankruptcy). Sourced from 1986 Dodge Aries K-car donor (sister vehicle, K-platform, same HVAC system). One star off because the K-car cross-reference was needed (limited LeBaron Town and Country wagon donors at this age), and the donor was slightly different year requiring minor connector adap

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Chrysler LeBaron generations are there?

Three distinct generations across the LeBaron name 1977-1995: (1) M-BODY LEBARON 1977-1981 – full-size REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE traditional Chrysler luxury sedan, available as 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan, V8 engines (318 V8, 360 V8), built on Chrysler M-body rear-drive platform shared with Dodge Diplomat and Plymouth Gran Fury, 5 model years. (2) K-BODY LEBARON 1982-1988 – compact FRONT-WHEEL-DRIVE on famous Chrysler K-platform (the K-cars that saved Chrysler from bankruptcy in early 1980s), multiple body variants including sedan/coupe/CONVERTIBLE/wagon Town and Country, engines 2.2L/2.5L 4-cyl plus 2.6L Mitsubishi and turbo variants. (3) J-BODY LEBARON 1987-1995 – compact coupe/convertible/sedan on Chrysler J-platform (Chrysler-specific, NOT GM J-body), the most famous LeBaron era with iconic LeBaron Convertible and LeBaron GTC performance variant. LeBaron name discontinued after 1995.

What was the LeBaron Convertible's significance?

The LeBaron Convertible (initially K-body 1982-1988, then continuing in J-body 1987-1995) was a cultural icon of 1980s/1990s American automotive landscape. Why significant: (1) AFFORDABLE CONVERTIBLE – made convertible ownership accessible at moderate price point when convertibles were rare/expensive. (2) MAINSTREAM CONVERTIBLE – mass-market Chrysler product, not niche luxury vehicle. (3) 1980s STYLING – had distinctive era look that defined Chrysler design. (4) FEATURED in popular movies and TV (Pretty in Pink, Married with Children, others). (5) HELPED REVIVE CHRYSLER – alongside the broader K-car platform success. (6) CONTINUED LONGEVITY – convertible variant continued through both K and J body eras 1982-1995 (13 years). The LeBaron Convertible was important affordable convertible of its era, ranking among Chrysler’s iconic products.

What was the LeBaron GTC?

The LeBaron GTC was performance variant of the J-body LeBaron 1987-1995 (Gran Turismo Coupe or ‘Gran Touring Convertible’). Specifications: (1) Available in coupe and convertible body styles. (2) 2.2L TURBO engine option (~174 HP turbocharged 4-cylinder) or later 2.5L turbo. (3) Sport-tuned suspension with stiffer springs/dampers. (4) Performance-oriented styling cues including front and rear spoilers. (5) Sport interior with bucket seats. (6) Performance wheels and tires. (7) Often featured in body-colored trim. The LeBaron GTC was Chrysler’s attempt at affordable performance during turbo-era enthusiasm of late 1980s/early 1990s. The 2.2L turbo engine was famously responsive but reliability concerns from age have affected long-term ownership.

What's the difference between K-body and J-body LeBarons?

Both were compact FWD Chrysler platforms but distinct: K-BODY (1982-1988): the original K-platform that saved Chrysler from bankruptcy. More upright/squared styling. Sedan/coupe/convertible/wagon variants. Town and Country wagon variant in K-body era. Larger range of body styles. Older transmission technology. J-BODY (1987-1995): newer J-platform (Chrysler-specific, NOT GM J-body of Cadillac Cimarron). More aerodynamic curved styling reflective of late 80s/90s design. Only coupe/convertible/sedan (no wagon in J-body). More refined ride and handling. Updated electronics. Two platforms ran in parallel 1987-1988 with both K-body and J-body LeBarons sold simultaneously before K-body discontinued 1988 leaving only J-body.

Why does my HVAC click but not change temperature?

Classic STRIPPED BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR symptom. The actuator motor still runs (you hear clicking), but the internal plastic gears have worn teeth and can’t engage to actually move the blend door. The motor spins but produces no door movement. Other diagnostics: (1) Visual inspection often shows motor running when temperature control changed but blend door not moving. (2) Hand-rotating the blend door manually (if accessible) confirms blend door is free but actuator can’t move it. (3) Removing actuator and inspecting gears confirms stripped teeth. Common on K-body and J-body LeBarons due to age – plastic gears now 30+ years old. Replacement actuator restores normal HVAC temperature control.

How do I diagnose between vacuum and electric actuator?

Determined by generation: M-BODY LEBARON (1977-1981): typically VACUUM DIAPHRAGM actuator. Round housing with vacuum hose connection. Engine vacuum routed via heat valve and vacuum motor. K-BODY and J-BODY LEBARON (1982-1995): typically ELECTRIC MOTOR actuator. Rectangular housing with electrical connector. Small DC motor with internal gear reduction. Vacuum diaphragm failure shows different symptoms than electric: vacuum diaphragm leaks gradually losing function in all positions, electric fails more dramatically with stuck door or clicking sounds. Replace with same type as original – don’t substitute electric for vacuum or vice versa.

Can I use a K-car HVAC actuator from a Reliant or Aries?

POSSIBLY YES for K-body LeBaron (1982-1988). The K-platform was shared across many Chrysler vehicles including Dodge Aries, Plymouth Reliant, Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager (early years), Chrysler New Yorker, and others. K-body HVAC systems often used similar/identical components across these sister vehicles. K-car cross-reference can significantly expand donor availability for K-body LeBaron actuators. Confirm same year range and HVAC system type. For J-body LeBaron (1987-1995), cross-reference Dodge Daytona and Dodge Lancer (J-platform sisters). Generation-specific compatibility – K-body and J-body parts don’t interchange.

How does shipping work?

Free shipping to all 50 US states. Actuator lightweight (0.5-1 lb) in padded box with output shaft protection. UPS or FedEx Ground for US transit (3-7 days). Sourcing time may be longer for older LeBaron generations (J-body now 30+ years old) – 5-14 days typical depending on donor availability.
