2 reviews for Daihatsu Hijet Intercooler for Sale | NON-US FACTORY MARKET kei truck/van (660cc max)

  1. Liutgarde Vandenbosch-Heeresma

Replaced intercooler on my imported 1997 Daihatsu Hijet Truck Turbo 4WD (kei vehicle grey-market import). Vaz immediately confirmed the kei vehicle non-US factory status and emphasized the turbo-specific requirement (intercooler only on turbo variants). Sourced from a 1995 Daihatsu Hijet Cargo Turbo donor (same era, same engine family). No cracks, fins intact, fittings perfect. Took 21 days for Japanese sourcing with crate shipping. Installed at my JDM specialist. Hijet back to full boost operat

  2. Jaromir Dvorackova-Slavik

Bought intercooler for my 1998 Daihatsu Hijet Cargo Turbo (microvan variant). Vaz emphasized the body variant distinction (Truck/Cargo/Atrai) and turbo requirement. Sourced from 1999 Toyota Pixis Van Turbo donor (Toyota rebadge cross-reference – same vehicle as Hijet Cargo, just Toyota badged). One star off because the kei vehicle 25-year import rule confusion (some sources had different cutoff dates) required additional verification of donor eligibility. Otherwise, the JDM grey-market kei vehic

Frequently Asked Questions

Was the Daihatsu Hijet ever sold in US through Daihatsu dealers?

NO. The Daihatsu Hijet was NEVER officially sold in US through Daihatsu factory channels. The Hijet is a kei vehicle (Japanese microcar class) that doesn’t comply with US FMVSS safety standards or EPA emissions. Even during Daihatsu’s brief US market presence 1988-1992, only Charade and Rocky were sold (NOT Hijet). The Hijet was Japan domestic and other Asian markets only. Any Hijet in US is a grey-market import.

My Hijet doesn't have turbo. Do I need this intercooler?

NO. Intercoolers are only on turbocharged Hijet variants. Naturally aspirated Hijets (660cc NA engines) do NOT have intercoolers and don’t need them. Intercoolers cool turbocharged air which has been heated by compression in the turbo. Without a turbo, there’s no need for an intercooler. If your Hijet is naturally aspirated, you don’t need this part. Confirm your engine is turbocharged before ordering.

I have a Toyota Pixis Truck. Will Daihatsu Hijet intercooler fit?

YES. The Toyota Pixis Truck is the Toyota REBADGE of the Daihatsu Hijet Truck (after Toyota acquired Daihatsu, some Daihatsu vehicles are sold under Toyota badges in Japan). Same vehicle, different badge. Toyota Pixis Truck = Daihatsu Hijet Truck. Toyota Pixis Van = Daihatsu Hijet Cargo. Mechanically identical, intercoolers cross-reference directly between Hijet and Pixis of same generation.

How is Daihatsu related to Toyota?

Daihatsu is now a Toyota subsidiary. Timeline: 1907 Daihatsu founded. 1967 Toyota and Daihatsu began business cooperation. 1998 Toyota took majority stake. 2016 Toyota acquired remaining shares, full subsidiary. Some Daihatsu vehicles share parts/platforms with Toyota. Some Daihatsu models are sold under Toyota badges (Toyota Passo = Daihatsu Boon, Toyota Pixis Truck/Van = Daihatsu Hijet, etc.). After acquisition, Daihatsu Hijet has been sold simultaneously under both Daihatsu and Toyota Pixis badges in Japan.

How is Hijet different from other kei trucks?

All major Japanese automakers produce kei trucks for Japan market: Daihatsu Hijet, Honda Acty, Suzuki Carry (longest-running), Subaru Sambar, Mitsubishi Minicab. Each has distinct styling and features but all conform to kei specifications (660cc max engine, compact dimensions). Hijet (Daihatsu) is one of longest-running with 64+ years of production. Suzuki Carry has even longer history. Honda Acty was discontinued 2021. Subaru Sambar is rebadged Daihatsu Hijet since Subaru ended own kei truck production. All can be imported to US under 25-year rule.

What years of Hijet are currently US-importable?

1999 and earlier. The US 25-year import rule allows non-US-compliant vehicles over 25 years old to be imported without FMVSS/EPA compliance. In 2024, that means 1999 and earlier are eligible. Newer Hijets approach the 25-year mark each year. The Hijet has been in continuous production since 1960 so many generations are eligible. Hijet generations 1-7 are currently eligible (varies by specific generation production years).

How do I install the intercooler?

Moderate work: (1) Remove engine cover/access panels. (2) Disconnect inlet pipe from turbo outlet. (3) Disconnect outlet pipe to intake manifold. (4) Remove mounting brackets and bolts. (5) Carefully remove old intercooler. (6) Install new intercooler in mounting brackets. (7) Connect inlet pipe with new clamp. (8) Connect outlet pipe with new clamp. (9) Verify no boost leaks at startup. (10) Test under boost conditions. 1-3 hours typical. Specialty kei vehicle – work with mechanic familiar with Japanese vehicles.

How does shipping work?

Specialty Japanese import sourcing 14-30 business days typical. Sources: Japanese salvage yards (primary donor source), JDM specialty parts importers, grey-market vehicle parts specialists. Shipping from Japan adds 7-14 days transit. Domestic US delivery 3-7 days. Total 14-30 days. Intercooler weighs 5-15 lbs, shipped with core protection in padded crate.
