Description

About This Transmission

The Ford C4 is the lightweight 3 speed automatic transmission that powered the first generation Mustang, the Falcon, the Fairlane, the Bronco, the Comet, the Maverick, and the F-100 light duty pickup from 1964 through 1981. Introduced in 1964 as the Cruise-O-Matic Two and later renamed Select Shift Cruise-O-Matic, the C4 was Ford answer to the GM Powerglide and the Chrysler Torqueflite 904, but with a key advantage: a fully cast aluminum case that weighed only 135 to 145 pounds, less than half the weight of its Detroit competitors.

The C4 was designed for light to medium duty applications, paired with Ford small block engines: the 200 inline six, the Windsor V8 (260, 289, 302, and 351W), and some FE small case applications. A big block bell housing version was also produced for the Cleveland 351, the 351M, and the 400. This dual bell housing pattern (small block and big block) is one of the most important things to know when buying a used C4: the wrong bell housing pattern will not fit your engine.

The C4 became the favored 3 speed automatic of drag racers because of its light weight, simple internals, and abundant aftermarket support. A trans-braked race built C4 routinely handles 600 horsepower in classic Mustang, Falcon, and Maverick drag cars. For street restorations, a stock or mildly built C4 is the right transmission for any small block Ford classic.

Signs You Need a Replacement Transmission

  • Slipping in 1st or 2nd, classic clutch pack wear
  • Hard 1-2 or 2-3 shift, often a worn band or valve body
  • No reverse, often the rear band
  • Burnt fluid (dark, smells acrid)
  • Limp behavior, transmission stuck in 2nd gear
  • Pump whine on takeoff, common on neglected high mileage units
  • Cracked case, rare on aluminum but possible from impact
  • Worn output shaft splines

Known Things to Know Before You Buy

  • Bell housing pattern matters: The C4 was sold with two different bell housing patterns. The small block pattern fits SBF Windsor (260, 289, 302, 351W) and FE small case. The big block pattern fits Cleveland (351C, 351M, 400) and FE big case. The bell housing pattern is integrated into the case and CANNOT be swapped without changing the entire transmission case. We confirm bell housing pattern on every order.
  • 24 spline vs 26 spline input: Early 1964 to 1969 C4s use a 24 spline input shaft. Late 1970 to 1981 C4s use a 26 spline input shaft. The torque converter must match the input shaft. We confirm input spline count on every order.
  • 11 bolt vs 13 bolt pan: Early C4s use an 11 bolt oil pan. Late C4s use a 13 bolt pan. Pans are not interchangeable.
  • Two case lengths: Small block C4 cases are approximately 28.25 inches OAL. Big block C4 cases are approximately 30 inches OAL. This affects driveshaft length.
  • Selector position: Early C4s have a P-R-N-D-2-1 selector pattern. Some early units have only P-R-N-D-L (no 2 position).
  • Rare 4WD applications: The C4 was used in 1966 to 1977 early Broncos with Dana 20 (later NP205) transfer cases. 4WD C4s are application specific.
  • Aluminum case, NOT cast iron: This is a common online error. The C4 has always been aluminum.

Used OEM vs Rebuilt vs Race Built C4

A documented used OEM C4 is the most cost effective option for any classic Mustang, Falcon, Fairlane, or Bronco restoration. Pricing is roughly half to one third of a rebuilt unit, and a properly inspected unit with a verified pan, valve body, and bands will deliver another 50,000 plus miles of stock duty. Our C4s are pressure tested, shift tested, and the bell housing, splines, and pan are documented.

A professionally rebuilt C4 (TCI, Performance Automatic, Lentech) typically runs $1,800 to $3,200 for a street build. This makes sense for high mileage classic restorations where the original is beyond repair.

A race built C4 with trans-brake, manual valve body, hardened input, and high stall torque converter typically runs $3,500 to $7,500. This is the right transmission for drag race classic Mustang or Fairlane builds making 500 plus horsepower.

Condition and Inspection Process

  • Pressure test on the dyno bench, line pressure recorded across all gears
  • Shift test on the dyno bench, all 3 forward gears, reverse, and lockup tested
  • Torque converter inspected for shudder material and lockup clutch condition
  • Valve body inspected and pressure tested
  • Internal bands and clutch packs inspected where accessible
  • Case inspected for cracks, output shaft for runout, splines for wear
  • Bell housing pattern confirmed (small block or big block visual)
  • Input shaft spline count confirmed (24 or 26)
  • Pan bolt count confirmed (11 or 13)
  • Donor vehicle and engine pairing disclosed where available

Mileage on a classic C4 is rarely a meaningful number because most have been pulled from cars with multiple speedometer cables or engines. We document what we know and disclose unknowns clearly.

Buyer Tips, What to Know Before You Order

  • Bell housing first: The single most important specification. Small block or big block. Get this wrong and the transmission will not bolt up.
  • Spline count second: 24 spline (1964 to 1969) or 26 spline (1970 to 1981). Match to your torque converter.
  • Pan bolt pattern third: 11 bolt early or 13 bolt late. Pans are not cross compatible.
  • Aluminum case is correct: Do not be confused by listings that say cast iron. The C4 has always been aluminum.
  • Plan a fresh fluid (Type F or Mercon with Type F additive), filter, and pan gasket at install.
  • Consider a shift kit (TransGo or B&M) at install for crisper shifts and longer life.
  • Driveshaft length: Small block C4 (28.25 in OAL) and big block C4 (30 in OAL) cases are different lengths. Verify your driveshaft.

4 reviews for Ford C4 Transmission for Sale | 3 Speed Light Duty Automatic, 1964 to 1981

  1. Sandy P., Tucson AZ

Replaced the C4 in my Bronco with a 4WD C4 from Vaz. They verified small block bell housing for my 302, 26 spline input, and confirmed it had the correct adapter for my Dana 20 transfer case. Shipping took the full 10 business days but the unit was packaged well and undamaged. Half star off for the wait, but the transmission itself is perfect for my mild trail Bronco.

  2. David Harris (verified owner)

Ordered the Ford C4 transmission from Vaz Auto Solutions for my classic Ford Torino. The transmission arrived quickly, well-packed, and has restored the car’s original performance. Smooth shifts and reliable. Definitely recommend!

  3. Kevin Thompson (verified owner)

Chose the Ford C4 transmission from Vaz Auto Solutions for my vintage Ford Bronco. It arrived promptly and has transformed the off-road experience with its reliable performance and ease of use. Fantastic addition to any classic vehicle.

  4. Daniel S., Memphis TN

Bought a small block C4 from Vaz to replace my dying original. They confirmed small block bell housing pattern and 24 spline input for my 289, came out of a 1969 Mustang. Aluminum case, 11 bolt pan, exactly what I needed. Pressure tested before shipping. Two months in, shifts crisp and the car drives like it did when it left San Jose Assembly. Cleaner install than expected for a fifty year old transmission.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicles use the Ford C4 transmission?

The C4 was used in the Ford Mustang (1964 to 1981), Falcon (1964 to 1970), Fairlane (1964 to 1969), Torino (1968 to 1976), Ranchero, Maverick (1970 to 1977), Comet, early Bronco (1966 to 1977), Pinto (1971 to 1980), F-100 light duty pickups (select years), Granada (1975 to 1980), Mercury Cougar (1967 to 1973), and Mercury Capri.

Is the C4 case cast iron or aluminum?

Aluminum. This is a common online error, including on some older Ford listings. The C4 has always used a cast aluminum case. This is one of the C4 main advantages: it weighs only 135 to 145 lbs, less than half the weight of a Chrysler Torqueflite or GM Powerglide.

What is the difference between small block and big block C4?

The bell housing pattern. Small block C4 fits the SBF Windsor (260, 289, 302, 351W) and FE small case. Big block C4 fits the Cleveland (351C, 351M, 400) and FE big case. The bell housing is integrated into the case and cannot be swapped. Always verify bell housing pattern before ordering.

My 1968 Mustang has a 289. What C4 do I need?

A 1964 to 1969 small block C4 with a 24 spline input shaft and 11 bolt oil pan. Verify the engine specifically (some 1968s came with 289 and some with 302), but a small block C4 of the correct year range is the right starting point.

Will a 1975 C4 fit my 1965 Mustang?

Possibly, with care. The bell housing patterns are the same (small block) but the late C4 has a 26 spline input shaft instead of the 24 spline of the 1965, and a 13 bolt pan instead of 11 bolt. You will need to match a torque converter with 26 splines and use a 13 bolt pan. A bolt up swap is not direct but is well documented.

Is there a core charge?

No. You are not required to return your old transmission under any circumstance.

Can a C4 handle a 351 Windsor?

A stock C4 is fine behind a stock 351 Windsor in normal driving. For high horsepower 351W or stroker builds making more than 350 lb-ft, a built C4 with a hardened input shaft and upgraded valve body is recommended.

How does shipping work?
