The ring and pinion are the two main gears inside the Ford Transit Connect differential. The pinion gear takes the spin from the driveshaft and turns the larger ring gear, which drives the axles and wheels. The size relationship between the two sets the final drive ratio, which is the single biggest factor in how the van pulls, cruises, and uses fuel.
Owners replace the ring and pinion when the gears wear, when a differential is rebuilt, or when they want a different ratio for towing or economy. Worn gears announce themselves with a whine that changes with speed, a grinding feel, or play in the driveline. Left alone they can damage the bearings and carrier around them, so replacing the set early protects the more expensive parts.
