Description

About the Geo Storm Timing Cover

Geo Storm (1990-1993) was the sporty 2-door coupe/hatchback variant of GM’s Geo economy import brand. Unlike Metro/Prizm economy focus, Storm targeted performance-minded young buyers competing with Honda CRX, Toyota Paseo. Donor: Isuzu Impulse. Production at SIA (Subaru-Isuzu Automotive) Lafayette Indiana joint venture.

DISCONTINUED after 1993 – did NOT continue under Chevy brand (unlike Metro/Prizm/Tracker). Compact sporty coupe segment declined as buyers shifted to SUVs. Engines: 1.6L SOHC (95 HP base), 1.6L DOHC (130 HP GSi performance), some 1.8L variants.

Timing cover protects timing belt assembly from contamination. Cross-reference Isuzu Impulse (US sibling) and Isuzu Stylus (sedan variant). Often replaced during timing belt service. We inspect for damage, mounting, gasket surface.

2 reviews for Geo Storm Timing Cover for Sale | engine timing cover for Geo Storm

  1. Maximilien Goutard-Beaulieu

Replaced timing cover on my 1992 Geo Storm GSi (the rare 1.6L DOHC 130 HP performance variant in hatchback body) during a complete timing belt service. The original cover had developed cracks from 30+ years of age and engine bay heat exposure. Vaz confirmed the GSi variant and 1.6L DOHC engine specifically. Sourced from a 1991 Isuzu Impulse RS donor (US sibling cross-reference, same DOHC engine). No damage, mounting holes intact, gasket surfaces perfect. Installed during full timing belt service

  2. Yevgeniya Tikhonravova-Sokolskaya

Bought timing cover for my 1993 Geo Storm 1.6L SOHC (base trim, last production year). Vaz emphasized the 1990-1993 production run and 1993-specific configuration. Sourced from a 1992 Isuzu Stylus donor (sedan variant cross-reference – same engine and timing cover). One star off because the SIA Lafayette Indiana production history (GM/Isuzu/Subaru joint venture) was new information to me – I didn’t realize this was produced in Indiana at a joint venture. The donor cross-reference saved significa

Frequently Asked Questions

Why was the Geo Storm discontinued?

Multiple factors led to 1993 discontinuation: (1) Compact sporty coupe segment declined in early 1990s recession era. (2) Buyer preferences shifted toward SUVs and larger vehicles. (3) Storm was at end of its product cycle. (4) Unlike Metro/Prizm/Tracker, Storm targeted a specific sporty niche that was losing relevance. The Storm did NOT continue under Chevy brand (unlike other Geo models that became Chevy when Geo brand ended 1998). The Storm was simply ended at end of 1993 production.

I have an Isuzu Impulse. Will this Geo Storm cover fit?

YES. The Isuzu Impulse was the Geo Storm’s direct donor vehicle – same vehicle with Isuzu badging sold US through Isuzu dealers 1990-1993. Same engines, same engine bay, same timing cover. Cross-references directly between Geo Storm and Isuzu Impulse of same year and engine variant.

I have an Isuzu Stylus. Will this fit?

Possibly yes for cross-reference. The Isuzu Stylus was the SEDAN VARIANT of the same platform as Geo Storm and Isuzu Impulse (coupe/hatchback). Same engines (1.6L SOHC, 1.6L DOHC), same engine bay layout. Timing covers often cross-reference depending on specific engine variant. The Stylus expands sourcing options as a sedan-bodied sibling. Verify your Stylus year and engine for cross-reference confirmation.

What was the Geo Storm GSi?

GSi was the performance variant of Geo Storm. Features: 1.6L DOHC I4 engine producing 130 HP (vs 95 HP base SOHC), sport-tuned suspension, specific GSi badging and trim, often hatchback body style. The GSi was designed to compete with Honda CRX Si and other 1990s pocket rockets. Among the sportiest Geo brand vehicles. Today the GSi is the more collectible Geo Storm variant due to performance reputation.

Should I replace timing cover during timing belt service?

STRONGLY RECOMMEND if cover shows any damage. The timing cover must be removed for timing belt service anyway, so labor is committed. If the cover is cracked, has stripped mounting holes, gasket surface damaged, or shows significant aging, replacing during timing belt service is cost-effective. If cover is in good condition, can be reused. Inspect carefully when timing belt is being serviced.

How do I install the timing cover?

Process: (1) Often done during timing belt service. (2) Remove serpentine belt and accessories as needed for access. (3) Remove crankshaft pulley. (4) Remove old timing cover mounting bolts (note locations – different lengths). (5) Carefully remove old cover. (6) Clean gasket surfaces on block. (7) Install new gasket (often included or sold separately). (8) Install new cover, tightening bolts to specified torque (don’t over-torque – cracks plastic covers). (9) Reinstall crankshaft pulley and accessories. (10) Verify no leaks. 1-2 hours standalone, 3-6 hours combined with timing belt service.

My Storm has the 1.8L engine. Is this cover compatible?

Specific year and trim dependent. Some Geo Storm trims used 1.8L engines instead of 1.6L SOHC/DOHC. Timing cover may differ between 1.6L and 1.8L variants due to engine block differences. Specify your specific year (1990-1993), engine displacement (1.6L SOHC, 1.6L DOHC, or 1.8L), and trim level at order so we can match the correct cover. Call (240) 301-0095 to verify.

How does shipping work?

Free shipping to all 50 US states. Timing cover weighs 1-3 lbs in padded box. UPS or FedEx Ground. 3-7 business days. Bubble wrap, edges protected to prevent cracking damage in transit.
