The Lamborghini V12 is one of the longest-running naturally aspirated V12 programs in automotive history. The first version was designed by Giotto Bizzarrini and entered production in 1963 at 3.5 liters for the Lamborghini 350GT. Over 47 years it grew to 6.5 liters in the final Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce - with each generation delivering dramatically increasing output while maintaining the fundamental 60-degree V12 DOHC architecture.
For the 2011 Aventador, Lamborghini chose to design an entirely new engine from a blank sheet. The L539, while sharing the same 6.5-liter displacement and 60-degree V12 layout as its predecessor, uses entirely different bore and stroke dimensions - 95mm bore by 76.4mm stroke in an oversquare configuration. The L539 debuted with 700 hp and was progressively developed to 770 hp in the Aventador SVJ. The two generations share no internal components.
