About the Mercury Comet Battery

The Mercury Comet started its life as a compact car developed by Ford in the late 1950s, originally intended as an Edsel model. When Edsel was discontinued in 1959, the planned compact was rebranded and launched in 1960 simply as the 'Comet', sold through Lincoln Mercury dealers but without the Mercury badge for the first two model years. The Mercury Comet name officially appeared from 1962 through 1969, after which the Comet nameplate took a break and reappeared 1971 to 1977 on the Maverick platform. This 1960 Comet listing is for the original Falcon platform first year vehicle, a car that helped launch the compact car class in America alongside the Ford Falcon. Ford switched from 6 volt to 12 volt electrical systems in 1956, so the 1960 Comet uses a 12V negative ground system. The starting battery provides cranking current to spin the starter motor, plus supplemental power for ignition, lighting, and accessories when the alternator output is insufficient (idle or engine off).

Important Disclosure: Buying a Used Battery

Selling used automotive batteries is an unusual practice and the customer deserves a clear understanding of what they are buying. Unlike most used auto parts which retain most of their original function, used lead acid batteries have several specific quality challenges:

  • Battery chemistry degrades with age regardless of use. A 5 year old battery left sitting will have lost significant capacity to internal sulfation
  • The Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) and Reserve Capacity ratings printed on a battery reflect the new state specifications, not the degraded current state of a used unit
  • Used batteries are difficult to ship: lead acid batteries are classified as hazmat (Class 8 corrosive) under DOT regulations and require ground shipping only, no air freight
  • Used batteries typically have a much shorter remaining service life than new batteries, often measured in months rather than years

Our standard practice for any used battery sale is to perform a load test before shipping and disclose the actual measured CCA value at the current state, not the new state rating. We also note any visible swelling, leakage, terminal corrosion, or other quality concerns. If you are considering this used battery for a daily driver application, we typically recommend purchasing a new battery from a parts store instead. Used batteries are most appropriate as a temporary measure, for low use applications (occasional driver classic, parts car, project vehicle), or where original date stamping is required for concours restoration.

Classic Comet Restoration Considerations

If you are restoring a 1960 Comet you may want an era correct battery with the appropriate vintage style for show purposes. We can confirm the date code, casing style, and terminal configuration of any battery we ship. For show cars, some owners choose to source a vintage style replica battery (which is new internally but appears period correct externally) from suppliers like Antique Auto Battery.

Signs Your 1960 Comet Battery Needs Replacement

  • Slow engine cranking on a warm day (cold weather makes any battery weaker)
  • Battery will not hold charge between drives
  • Headlights dim noticeably at idle
  • Visible swelling, leakage, or corrosion on battery casing
  • Battery is over 5 years old regardless of use pattern
  • Load test result well below the stamped CCA rating

How long will this battery last?
The average lifespan of this battery is around 3 to 5 years, depending on usage and environmental conditions. Regular maintenance can extend its life. Please note: that figure is the lifespan of a new battery. As a used unit, the remaining service life will be less and depends on the battery's current load test results, which we disclose before shipping.
