About the Mercury Monarch Gas Tank

The Mercury Monarch was sold in the US from 1975 through 1980 as the upscale Mercury sibling of the Ford Granada. It replaced the Comet in the Lincoln Mercury lineup and offered traditional American compact / midsize sedan appeal during the post oil crisis era when fuel efficiency was a growing concern. Body styles included a 2 door coupe and a 4 door sedan. Engine options ranged from the Ford 200 and 250 cubic inch inline 6 (paired with manual or automatic transmissions) up to the small block V8 in 302 and 351 cubic inch displacements. The gas tank is a critical fuel system component, storing fuel between fill ups and feeding it to the engine through the fuel pump and fuel lines. On the Monarch, the tank is mounted under the rear of the vehicle ahead of the rear axle, secured with steel mounting straps. Capacity is 19 gallons, providing good cruising range for the era. Internal baffles prevent fuel from sloshing during cornering and braking, which keeps the fuel pump pickup submerged and prevents fuel starvation.

Classic Fuel System Restoration Considerations

Installing a 45 to 50 year old used gas tank requires more consideration than a modern part installation. Here is what we recommend before installing this tank:

  • Internal inspection: have the tank professionally cleaned and inspected for internal rust, sediment, and pinhole leaks. A flashlight inspection through the sending unit hole reveals the internal condition
  • Sealing: many classic restorers apply an internal tank sealer like POR 15 fuel tank sealer or Red Kote to prevent future rust through and stop minor pinhole leaks. This is a worthwhile investment for any classic tank that will see daily use
  • Whole fuel system refresh: when installing a classic gas tank, plan to replace all rubber fuel lines, fuel filter, and any rubber gaskets in the sending unit. Original 1970s rubber components are likely brittle, may not be ethanol fuel compatible, and are an unnecessary risk to leave in service
  • Sending unit: this tank does NOT include a sending unit. The original cork float sending units from this era often need replacement, especially if the tank is going to see ethanol blended fuel. Modern brass or plastic float sending units are available from classic Ford / Mercury parts suppliers
  • Fill neck and vent hose: inspect the fill neck rubber boot for cracks. Replace any old rubber vent or vapor recovery hoses
  • Tank straps and mounting hardware: classic tank mounting straps often have surface rust. Wire brush, prime, and paint or replace as part of the install
