The Volvo D13 and Mack MP8 Engine Family
Important clarification: the Volvo D13 and the Mack MP8 are the same engine family with different OEM badging and calibration. The Volvo Group acquired Mack Trucks in 2000-2001 and consolidated the heavy-duty engine programs onto the Volvo 13L Inline-6 architecture. When you see “Volvo D13” or “Mack MP8” on a Class 8 truck, you’re looking at engines that share the fundamental architecture, bore and stroke (131mm × 158mm), Double Common Rail fuel system, VGT turbocharger, and aftertreatment systems. The Volvo D13 powers Volvo VN-series trucks; the Mack MP8 powers Mack chassis.
Critical: The Volvo D13 does NOT fit Freightliner trucks. Freightliner Class 8 trucks use Detroit Diesel DD13 and DD15 engines, which are a completely different engine family (Detroit Diesel / Mercedes-Benz lineage). The naming similarity (D13 vs DD13) is coincidental and the two engines are not interchangeable.
