Description
About This Transmission
The BorgWarner T19 is a heavy-duty 4 speed manual transmission used in Ford F-250 and F-350 trucks from 1968 through 1988. It is the improved successor to the BorgWarner T18- similar in appearance and dimensions but featuring fully synchronized first gear, which allows downshifting into first while the truck is in motion. This was a significant practical improvement over the T18, which required a complete stop before engaging first gear.
The T19 was offered in three gear ratio sets during its production life. The T19A with 4.02:1 first gear was the most common and was used extensively behind the Ford 6.9L IDI diesel and 460 V8 in F-250 and F-350 trucks. A medium-ratio version with 5.11:1 first gear appeared for only two years (1983 to 1984). The wide-ratio version with 6.32:1 first gear was limited to the Ford 500-800 series heavy-duty commercial trucks and is less commonly encountered in standard pickup applications.
The T19 was replaced by the German-built ZF5 5-speed starting in 1987 for diesel applications. For Bullnose-era Ford truck enthusiasts maintaining original drivetrains, a gear-tested T19 in a confirmed ratio is the correct replacement part.
Signs You Need a Replacement Transmission
- Difficulty or inability to engage first gear- synchronizer wear on the most-used gear
- Grinding when downshifting into first while moving- synchronizer wear (note: the T18 cannot shift into first while moving- only the T19 can)
- Gear popping out under load- worn detent springs or shift fork wear
- Oil leaks at front or rear seals- aged seal deterioration common on Bullnose-era units
- Whining noise at speed- input shaft bearing wear
- Reverse grinding- reverse synchronizer wear or incorrect shift technique
Known Problems With This Transmission
- Gear ratio confusion: Three different first-gear ratios exist (4.02, 5.11, 6.32) and they are not immediately identifiable from external inspection without checking the nameplate tag. The wrong ratio in a specific truck application affects launch feel and engine rpm at road speed. We identify and confirm the gear ratio of every unit before shipping.
- T18 vs T19 identification: The T18 and T19 look nearly identical externally- same case dimensions, same overall length, similar appearance. The key difference is the synchronized first gear of the T19. They are identified by their tag numbers and shift pattern. We identify the transmission before shipping.
- No overdrive: The T19 has no overdrive gear- 4th gear is direct drive (1.00:1). Buyers expecting an overdrive transmission should be directed to the ZF5 5-speed which replaced the T19 in 1987 Ford diesel applications.
- Aged seals: Most T19 units available today are from 1970s and 1980s trucks. Input, output, and shift lever seals are commonly aged and seeping. We inspect all seal surfaces and report on condition before shipping.
- PTO port compatibility: Dual PTO ports are present on the T19. Verify your specific PTO equipment matches before ordering if PTO capability is required.
T19 Gear Ratio Variants- All Three Configurations
Three gear ratio sets were offered across the T19 production run:
| Variant | 1st Gear Ratio | Application | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| T19A (most common) | 4.02:1 | Ford F-250/F-350 with 6.9L IDI diesel and 460 V8 2WD | Most available used unit. Standard diesel and big-block gas pairing. 2WD and some 4WD. |
| Medium Ratio | 5.11:1 | Ford F-250/F-350 specific 1983 to 1984 only | Rare- produced for only two years. Harder to source. |
| Wide Ratio | 6.32:1 | Ford 500-800 series HD commercial trucks | 460 V8 4WD F-250/F-350 1983 to 1986 | Rarely encountered in standard pickups. Most desirable for off-road applications due to ultra-low first gear. |
What Is Included- What Is Not Included
| INCLUDED | Complete transmission assembly with all internal gears, synchronizers, shift forks, shift rails, and PTO port covers. Output yoke where present. |
|---|---|
| NOT INCLUDED | Clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, flywheel, transmission fluid, PTO units. |
| Fluid Note | The T19 uses gear oil- 80W-90 or 85W-140 conventional gear oil. Confirm with your specific application. |
| Core Note | No core charge. You are not required to return your old transmission. |
Vehicle Compatibility- Direct Fit
The BorgWarner T19 was factory installed in the following Ford trucks:
| Ford F-250 and F-350 (1968 to 1986) | Gas applications with 300 inline-6, 360 FE, 390 FE, 460 V8 |
|---|---|
| Ford F-250 and F-350 (1983 to 1987) | 6.9L IDI diesel- T19A with 4.02:1 first gear |
| Ford 500-800 Series HD Trucks | Wide ratio 6.32:1 first gear variant |
| International Harvester Trucks | Some 1975 to 1980 IH applications- different version, rarely used in Ford swaps |
The T19 uses the Ford truck bellhousing bolt pattern compatible with the 300 inline-6, 360 and 390 FE, and 460 V8 engines. It also fits behind the 6.9L IDI diesel with the correct bell housing. Call (240) 301-0095 with your specific engine and year before ordering to confirm bellhousing compatibility.
Transmission compatibility: Replaced the BorgWarner T18 in Ford applications. Was itself replaced by the ZF5 5-speed in 1987 (diesel) and later years (gas). The ZF5 is a superior replacement if overdrive is desired.

Used OEM vs Rebuilt- Which Is Right for You?
Used OEM is the right choice for a Bullnose-era F-250 or F-350 maintaining an original drivetrain. Our units are gear tested with the ratio variant confirmed so you know exactly what you are receiving.
If overdrive is desired, the ZF5 5-speed is a direct upgrade that replaced the T19 in 1987 Ford diesel applications. Call us and we can discuss whether a T19 replacement or a ZF5 upgrade is the better fit for your truck.
Condition and Inspection Process
- Gear engagement test through all 4 forward gears and reverse- any grinding fails the unit
- Gear ratio confirmed- nameplate tag read and first gear identified as 4.02, 5.11, or 6.32
- T18 vs T19 confirmed- synchronized first gear verified
- Seal surface inspection- input, output, and shift lever seals inspected for leaks
- PTO ports inspected and port configuration noted
- Case inspection for cracks and external damage
Mileage varies by unit. Where available we provide it. Where it cannot be confirmed, we disclose this before your order is placed.
Buyer Tips- What to Know Before You Order
- Know your ratio before calling: Tell us your truck year, engine, and whether it is 2WD or 4WD and we will identify the correct ratio variant for your application.
- T19 vs T18 identification: Both look nearly identical. The T19 has synchronized first gear and can downshift into first while moving. The T18 cannot. If unsure which is in your truck, the transmission tag number and shift pattern identify it. Call us and we will help you identify what you have.
- No overdrive: The T19 maxes out at direct drive in 4th gear. If highway cruise RPM is a concern, consider the ZF5 5-speed as an upgrade- it provides overdrive and significantly higher torque capacity.
- Bellhousing compatibility: The T19 bellhousing bolt pattern varies by engine family. Confirm your engine (inline-6, FE V8, 460, or 6.9L IDI diesel) before ordering. We will verify bellhousing compatibility.
- Fluid: Use conventional 80W-90 or 85W-140 gear oil. Confirm with your specific application- do not use ATF in the T19.

Needed a T19A with the 4.02 first gear for my IDI diesel. Vaz confirmed the ratio from the tag before shipping — that is exactly the right way to do it. All 4 gears engage cleanly. First gear shifts in and out smoothly while moving which is the whole point of having a T19 over a T18. Excellent transaction.

Bought a T19 for my 460-powered F-350. Vaz confirmed the wide ratio 6.32 first gear which is what I needed for off-road use. All gears work well. One slow output seal seep — disclosed before I bought it and addressed at install. Would buy from them again.
