Description
About This Engine
The Porsche Carrera GT engine is one of the most extraordinary naturally aspirated powerplants ever installed in a production road car. Its origins trace back to 1992 when Porsche secretly developed a 3.5-liter V10 for the Footwork Formula One team- a program cancelled before the engine ever raced. Eight years later the V10 was resurrected, enlarged, and developed for Porsche's LMP2000 Le Mans prototype. That program was also cancelled after two days of testing in 1999. Rather than shelve the engine a second time, Porsche adapted the 5.7-liter V10 for road use in the Carrera GT.
The result is one of the most driver-focused naturally aspirated engines of any era. The 68-degree V10 with its DOHC configuration, titanium connecting rods, Nikasil-coated bores, and 12.0:1 compression ratio produces 605 horsepower at 8,000 rpm- from 5.7 liters, with no forced induction of any kind. The engine redlines at 8,400 rpm and produces a sound that most automotive journalists describe as the finest they have ever heard from a road car.
Only 1,270 Carrera GT cars were produced from 2003 to 2007. This makes the Typ 980/01 V10 one of the rarest production supercar engines in existence. Every available unit represents a significant and irreplaceable automotive artifact.
Signs You Need a Replacement Engine
- Oil consumption above factory specification- internal seal deterioration on high-mileage or improperly maintained examples
- Engine warning lights related to cam timing- VarioCam actuator concern on high-mileage units
- Overheating- the Carrera GT cooling system is exceptionally complex and sensitive to maintenance lapses
- Dry sump oil pressure anomalies- scavenge pump or external system concerns
- Unusual mechanical noise under load- bearing concern requiring immediate specialist attention
Known Problems With This Engine
- Dry sump system complexity: The Carrera GT uses a sophisticated dry sump oiling system. The external oil tank, scavenge lines, and oil pump are not included with the engine and must be inspected and serviced at the time of engine replacement.
- VarioCam intake timing: The variable valve timing system on the intake camshafts can develop actuator wear or position sensor faults on high-mileage units. We note any fault history where documentation exists.
- Cooling system: The Carrera GT radiator is approximately five times the size of a 911 Turbo's radiator of the same era- the engine generates significant heat and the entire cooling system must be in excellent condition for reliable operation.
- Extremely limited specialist support: Only a handful of shops worldwide are qualified to work on the Carrera GT. Porsche Exclusive and a small number of certified independent specialists are the only viable options for installation and service.
- Rarity and documentation: Given the extreme rarity of this engine, complete provenance documentation- available service history, mileage, and engine identification- is critically important. We provide everything available from the donor vehicle history.

Vehicle Compatibility
The Typ 980/01 V10 engine was used exclusively in one production vehicle:
| Porsche Carrera GT (Typ 980) | 2003 to 2007- all production cars. 1,270 units total. |
|---|
The Carrera GT engine was designed specifically for the Carrera GT's carbon fiber monocoque chassis with a three-point carbon subframe engine mounting system. It is not a practical swap candidate for any other application due to its unique mounting architecture, dry sump system, and ECU integration. Any work on this engine requires Porsche Exclusive or certified independent Carrera GT specialists.
Transmission compatibility: Porsche 6-speed manual gearbox (specific to Carrera GT) with twin-plate Porsche Ceramic Composite Clutch (PCCC) and limited-slip differential. The PCCC is vehicle-specific and not interchangeable with standard Porsche clutch systems.

Used OEM vs Rebuilt- Which Is Right for You?
Used OEM is essentially the only option for Carrera GT engine replacement. No new units are available outside Porsche Exclusive's own restoration program. Our inspected, documented units provide a verified engine for the most demanding and most exclusive supercar restoration projects.
Porsche Exclusive offers official Carrera GT restoration services, but on a highly selective basis and at cost levels commensurate with the car's value. For most Carrera GT owners requiring engine work, a documented used OEM unit and a qualified specialist shop is the practical path forward.
Condition and Inspection Process
- Full external inspection of all accessible engine components- block, heads, cam covers, timing cover
- Dry sump connection points and external oil system components assessed
- Mileage documented where available from Carrera GT service records or Porsche service history
- Engine code confirmed- Typ 980/01 identification verified
- Full inspection documentation provided before order confirmation
- Any known service history or fault history disclosed before shipping
Mileage varies by unit. Where available we provide it. Where it cannot be confirmed, we disclose this before your order is placed.
Buyer Tips- What to Know Before You Order
- Certified specialist required: Installation of this engine should only be performed by Porsche Exclusive or a specialist with documented Carrera GT experience. The engine mounting subframe, dry sump integration, and ECU programming are not standard Porsche procedures.
- Dry sump system: The external oil tank, scavenge pump, and all oil lines must be inspected and serviced at the time of engine installation. These are not included with the engine.
- Ceramic clutch: The Porsche Ceramic Composite Clutch (PCCC) is specific to the Carrera GT and requires specific handling procedures. Standard clutch bleeding and adjustment procedures do not apply.
- Documentation value: A Carrera GT with complete engine provenance documentation- full service history tracing back to the original sale- commands a significant premium in the market. Request all available documentation.
- Insurance and appraisal: Before undertaking any major Carrera GT engine work, ensure the car has appropriate agreed-value insurance with an appraiser who understands the vehicle's current market value.

Stefan K., Scottsdale AZ –
The Carrera GT is my most valuable car and sourcing a replacement engine for it after a catastrophic failure was an exceptionally stressful process. Vaz provided full external inspection documentation, disclosed available service history, and confirmed the Typ 980/01 code before I committed. My Porsche specialist confirmed the engine on arrival. Exactly the standard of process this transaction required.
Michael B., Beverly Hills CA –
Needed a Carrera GT engine for a significant restoration project. Vaz was one of only two suppliers who could actually provide documentation at this level. Full external inspection provided, condition honestly disclosed. One minor cam cover seep noted before shipping and addressed by my specialist. For an engine this rare, having a supplier who understands the documentation requirements is everything.
