Description

About the Mitsubishi i-MiEV ECM

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle) is Mitsubishi’s first volume production all electric vehicle, introduced globally in 2009 and sold in the US from 2012 through 2017 model years. Based on the Mitsubishi ‘i’ kei size city car platform, the i-MiEV is a four passenger hatchback powered by a 49 kW (66 hp) electric motor and a 16 kWh lithium ion battery pack mounted under the floor. The vehicle control module on the i-MiEV (which the live page calls ‘ECM’ following common customer search terminology, though the technically accurate term is more like Vehicle Control Unit or Motor Control Unit since there is no internal combustion engine) is the brain of the EV system. It monitors motor speed, battery state of charge, energy distribution, charging logic, regenerative braking blending, and high voltage interlock safety. Without a functioning control module, the i-MiEV will not power up.

Our used Mitsubishi i-MiEV control module is constructed from heat resistant plastic with internal metal components, designed to operate from negative 20 to 85 Celsius. It supports CAN Bus diagnostic communication, runs on a 12V control voltage with an EV high voltage interface for communicating with the inverter and battery systems.

Critical disclosure on EV control module programming

EV control modules from manufacturers like Mitsubishi are typically VIN coded at the factory and paired to the specific vehicle they came in. Installing a used module from a different donor i-MiEV will often require dealer flashing or pairing at a Mitsubishi dealer or qualified EV specialist. In some cases, the module cannot be re flashed and will only work in its original donor vehicle. Before ordering, call (240) 301-0095 with your i-MiEV year and VIN, and we will help confirm whether this specific unit can be re flashed for your vehicle. We disclose this up front so there are no surprises after install. Note that finding a Mitsubishi dealer or specialist with i-MiEV experience may be difficult given the limited US sales volume.

Signs Your i-MiEV ECM May Need Replacement

  • Vehicle will not power on or enter Ready mode
  • Charging not initiating despite functional charge connector
  • Multiple unexplained diagnostic codes across motor, battery, and charging systems
  • Loss of communication with diagnostic tools on CAN Bus
  • Erratic regenerative braking behavior
  • Charging fault codes that persist after charger and battery tests pass

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this module need to be programmed?

Likely yes. EV control modules from manufacturers like Mitsubishi are VIN coded at the factory. Installing a used module typically requires dealer flashing or pairing to your specific vehicle. Call (240) 301-0095 before ordering, we will help you understand the programming requirements for your specific i-MiEV.

Can I install this myself?

Physical installation is straightforward for an experienced technician, but EV systems involve high voltage components. We strongly recommend professional installation by a Mitsubishi technician or qualified EV specialist for safety reasons.

Does this fit other Mitsubishi vehicles?

No, this module is specific to the i-MiEV platform. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV uses a different control architecture, as do other Mitsubishi electrified vehicles.

How do I know if my module is bad versus another issue?

We strongly recommend proper diagnostics before replacing any EV control module. Common issues like degraded 12V auxiliary batteries, blown high voltage interlock fuses, or contactor faults can mimic ECM failure. A qualified technician with i-MiEV diagnostic tools should confirm module failure before replacement.

How rare are i-MiEV parts?

The i-MiEV was sold in low volumes in the US (around 2000 units total across 2012 to 2017). Genuine OEM parts are increasingly difficult to source as Mitsubishi has reduced production support. Used parts from salvage donor vehicles are often the primary replacement source for this vehicle.
