Description
About This Engine
The BMW S58 is the engine powering BMW's current generation of M cars- introduced in 2019 in the F97 X3 M and F98 X4 M, and then deployed in the G80 M3, G82 M4, and G87 M2 from 2021 onward. It is the direct successor to the S55 that powered the F80/F82 generation M3/M4, and represents one of the most significant advances in BMW M engine engineering in the brand's history. Ward's named it among the World's 10 Best Engines in 2023 (installed in the M2).
The S58's engineering philosophy differs from its predecessor in every critical structural area. Where the S55 had semi-forged internals (forged crank, cast pistons), the S58 has fully forged internals- forged crank with spherically ground crankpins, crack-forged connecting rods borrowed from the S63TU4 V8, and MAHLE forged pistons with anti-friction coating. Where the S55 had a conventional cast cylinder head, the S58 has a 3D-printed cylinder head core that allows coolant channel geometries impossible to achieve by casting- dramatically improving thermal management during sustained high-output operation. The compression ratio was reduced from the S55's 10.2:1 to 9.3:1, providing more boost headroom with the larger turbochargers.
The result is a foundation for which the tuning community has documented 700+ hp on stock turbos with basic bolt-on modifications, and over 1,000 hp with upgraded turbochargers. The dual-chamber oil sump ensures consistent lubrication during high-G track cornering. The twin mono-scroll turbocharger arrangement provides fast spool response without the packaging complexity of a single large twin-scroll unit. The S58 is widely regarded as potentially the last great naturally aspirated-adjacent BMW M engine- its development coincides with the electrification transition that will define M division's future products.
Signs You Need a Replacement Engine
- Check engine light with cam timing fault codes- VANOS actuator or solenoid concern on a high-mileage or poorly maintained S58
- Carbon buildup symptoms- rough idle, hesitation at light throttle, reduced throttle response on direct injection engines. Walnut blasting is the correct service.
- Oil leak at valve cover gasket or oil pan- common aging seal on any engine, including the S58
- Cooling system seepage- plastic coolant flanges and expansion tank require inspection on higher-mileage examples
- Turbocharger wastegate rattle at idle- more pronounced on tuned examples running higher boost
- Loss of power with no obvious fault- throttle body or intercooler leak on a boosted application
Known Problems With This Engine
- ECU VIN-linking- the most important S58 buyer consideration: The S58 ECU is VIN-linked in some configurations and may require BMW dealer programming when a replacement engine is installed. Confirm ECU compatibility with your receiving BMW M specialist before ordering. This is not a problem with the engine itself- it is an administrative step- but skipping it causes non-start after installation.
- Carbon buildup from direct injection: The S58 uses high-pressure direct injection. Carbon accumulates on intake valves over time as oil vapors from the PCV system deposit without fuel washing them. Walnut blasting at 50,000 to 75,000 miles is the standard service. We note visible carbon indicators where accessible.
- Cooling system thermal management: The 3D-printed cylinder head's cooling channels represent a step-change improvement, but the surrounding plastic coolant flanges and expansion tank still require inspection on higher-mileage examples. Service the complete cooling system at installation.
- Specialist installation required: S58 engine replacement is not a standard BMW dealer procedure. A BMW M specialist with documented S58 experience is required. ECU adaptation, turbocharger reinstallation, and cooling system bleed procedures require specialist knowledge.
- Tuning warranty consideration: Tuned S58 engines (with ECU calibration beyond factory spec) may void BMW warranty coverage. For a vehicle still within the warranty period, verify coverage status before proceeding with any engine replacement.

Used OEM vs Rebuilt- Which Is Right for You?
Used OEM is the only practical path for S58 replacement. The engine is still in production and no factory replacement program exists at standard dealer pricing. Our inspected, documented units represent the most accessible verified S58 replacement available.
A specialist S58 rebuild makes sense for a track build requiring specific internal preparation. BMW M specialists can rebuild the S58 with fresh tolerances and updated components. Call us for current unit condition.
Condition and Inspection Process
- Full external inspection of all accessible engine surfaces- block, heads, valve cover areas, turbocharger connections, and cooling system flanges
- Output variant confirmed- S58B30O0 (standard 473 hp) or S58B30T0 (Competition 503 hp) documented before every order
- Cooling system plastic flange areas inspected for cracking or seepage
- Carbon buildup assessment at accessible intake areas- walnut blasting recommendation noted
- Turbocharger oil seal areas inspected where turbos are present
- Mileage documented where available from service records or BMW connected data
Mileage varies by unit. Where available from the donor vehicle we provide it. Where it cannot be confirmed, we disclose this before your order is placed.
Buyer Tips- What to Know Before You Order
- ECU VIN adaptation before installation: Contact a BMW M specialist and confirm the ECU adaptation procedure before installing any S58. BMW dealer programming may be required to adapt the engine to your vehicle's VIN. This step is not optional and failing to do it causes a non-start condition.
- Service the cooling system at installation: Replace the expansion tank and inspect all coolant flanges regardless of apparent condition. The 3D-printed head's internal cooling channels are robust, but the surrounding plastic components follow the same aging pattern as all BMW cooling systems.
- Walnut blasting at installation: The S58 uses direct injection- schedule walnut blasting of the intake valves at installation or within the first 10,000 miles to address accumulated carbon deposits.
- Specialist installation mandatory: The S58 is not a general BMW shop job. Only a BMW M specialist with specific S58 experience should perform this work. Turbocharger reinstallation, ECU adaptation, and cooling system bleed are not standard procedures.
- Tuning potential note: The S58 responds exceptionally well to ECU tuning. Stage 1 (downpipe and ECU tune) typically produces 580 to 620 hp. The closed-deck block, fully forged internals, and 9.3:1 compression ratio provide substantial headroom for boost increase.

Vaz Auto ain’t playin’ with this S58 mod. Dyno numbers are insane. Smoked a Porsche last weekend. Worth every damn penny!
Robert Caldwell (verified owner) –
Vaz Auto’s S58 engine modification exceeded my expectations. The power increase is substantial, and the throttle response is noticeably crisper. A worthwhile upgrade for any M-series enthusiast.
Daniel M., Miami FL –
My M4 Competition suffered a catastrophic oiling system failure at a track event. Vaz confirmed the S58B30T0 Competition variant before I committed — critical for ECU compatibility — and provided full external inspection documentation. BMW M specialist confirmed the engine on arrival. ECU adaptation completed by the dealer. M4 is back at full Competition output.
Alex T., Los Angeles CA –
Replaced the S58 in my M3 after an engine failure. Vaz confirmed the standard 473 hp variant and noted cooling system flange condition. My BMW specialist handled the ECU adaptation and cooling system replacement at installation. Engine is producing exactly factory power — confirmed on dyno at 452 whp.
