The Ferrari F430 engine is one of the most technologically significant naturally aspirated V8 engines ever produced for a road car. Introduced in 2004 as the heart of the F430 Berlinetta, it is a completely new design- Ferrari explicitly stated it shares no components with the 360 Modena's engine. The 4.3-liter F136 E was developed by applying technology from Ferrari's Formula 1 division directly to a road car: the 4-valve cylinder heads, intake trumpets, and variable valve timing system were derived from contemporary F1 engine design.
The flat-plane crankshaft- with 180 degrees between throws rather than the 90-degree cross-plane arrangement used by American V8s- is responsible for several of the F430's defining characteristics. It allows the engine to rev more freely, respond more sharply to throttle inputs, and produce the distinctive exhaust note that Ferrari V8 engines are known for.
