Description
About This Engine
The Honda H22A is the high revving 2.2L DOHC VTEC inline four that powered the Honda Prelude through its fourth and fifth generations from 1992 to 2001 and a small handful of premium JDM Accord variants. With a 7,200 RPM redline (7,800 on Type S / Type R), 190 to 220 horsepower depending on variant, forged steel crankshaft and rods, and DOHC VTEC head, the H22A is widely considered one of the finest naturally aspirated inline four engines ever built. The combination of high RPM character, strong forged bottom end, and famous Honda VTEC crossover at 5,200 RPM gives the H22A a soundtrack and powerband that JDM enthusiasts have been chasing for thirty years.
The H22A architecture shares displacement with the F22 family but is a distinct engine. The DOHC head with VTEC, the bore and stroke, the rod ratio, and the forged bottom end are unique to the H22 series. The factory output ranges from 190 horsepower (US H22A1) to 220 horsepower (JDM Type S / Type R), all from a 2,156 cc inline four with no forced induction.
The H22A is FACTORY only in the Honda Prelude (1992 to 2001), the JDM Honda Accord SiR (CL1 chassis, 1997 to 2002), and the JDM / Euro Honda Accord Euro R and Type R (CL1, 2000 to 2002). It was never offered factory in any Civic, Integra, CR-X, or Del Sol. However, its compact dimensions, B series style mounting, and ability to swap into the Civic / Integra / CR-X / Del Sol chassis with off the shelf mount kits have made it the single most popular high performance Honda swap engine of the past two decades.
Signs You Need a Replacement Engine
- Excessive oil consumption beyond 1 quart per 1,500 miles
- Rod knock from high RPM abuse or oil starvation
- VTEC solenoid failure causing no VTEC engagement above 5,200 RPM
- Cylinder wall scoring or piston ring failure
- Loss of compression on one or more cylinders
- Worn timing belt that has been ignored beyond 90,000 mile interval (interference engine)
- Spun bearing from track day abuse or low oil pressure
- Cracked block from improper head gasket replacement or hydrolock
Known Things to Know Before You Buy
- Variant matters: H22A1 (US Prelude Si VTEC 1992-1996, 190 hp, OBD1), H22A4 (US Prelude Type SH 1997-2001, 200 hp, OBD2), H22A redtop (JDM 1992-1996, 200 hp, OBD1), H22A blacktop (JDM 1996-2001, 200-220 hp, OBD2), H22A Type S (JDM Prelude SiR Spec, 220 hp), H22A Type R (rare JDM, 220 hp). The badge color (red or black valve cover) indicates the generation.
- OBD1 vs OBD2: H22A1 is OBD1 (1992-1995). H22A4 and most JDM blacktops are OBD2. ECU and harness must match. We confirm OBD configuration on every order.
- Redtop vs blacktop: Cosmetic difference (red or black valve cover) plus minor cam profile and intake manifold revisions. Both are excellent, neither is dramatically better.
- US H22A1 has 10.0:1 compression and 190 hp. JDM redtop has 10.6:1 and 200 hp. JDM Type S / Type R has 11.0:1 and 220 hp. Match the variant to your build goal.
- Timing belt: All H22As use a timing belt. The H22A is an interference engine. Replace the timing belt at 60,000 to 90,000 mile intervals or every 7 years. We document timing belt history where known.
- Swap considerations: H22A into Civic / Integra / CR-X / Del Sol requires engine mount kit, custom or swap specific axles, ECU and harness conversion, and shifter linkage. Full swap kits are widely available (Hasport, Innovative).

Used OEM JDM vs Rebuilt vs Built H22A
A documented used OEM JDM H22A is the most cost effective option for most Prelude owners and swap builders. JDM imported H22As typically have 50,000 to 80,000 verified kilometers (roughly 30,000 to 50,000 miles), are pulled from low mileage Japanese market cars, and arrive in excellent condition. Our H22As are compression tested, variant confirmed, and OBD configuration documented.
A rebuilt H22A long block from a Honda specialty shop typically runs $4,500 to $7,500 depending on level of refresh. Standard rebuild includes new bearings, gaskets, timing belt, water pump, and resurfaced head.
A built H22A with forged pistons, upgraded valve train (Skunk2, BC), uprated head studs, and balanced crankshaft typically runs $8,000 to $15,000 plus. Built makes sense for high RPM naturally aspirated builds (8,500 RPM plus) or boosted projects targeting 350 plus horsepower.
Condition and Inspection Process
- Compression test across all 4 cylinders, pressure per cylinder recorded
- Visual inspection of block for cracks and cylinder wall condition
- Cylinder head inspected for cracks between valves and head gasket sealing surface
- VTEC solenoid tested for proper actuation
- Variant confirmed (redtop or blacktop, Type S identification, OBD1 vs OBD2)
- Timing belt history disclosed where known
- Donor vehicle (Prelude generation, JDM Accord, US versus JDM) documented
- Visual valve cover inspection for variant identification
Mileage on JDM imported H22As is documented from import paperwork. Where mileage cannot be verified, we disclose this clearly before shipping.
Buyer Tips, What to Know Before You Order
- Confirm variant first: H22A1 (US OBD1, 190 hp), H22A4 (US OBD2, 200 hp), redtop (JDM OBD1, 200 hp), blacktop (JDM OBD2, 200 hp), Type S (JDM, 220 hp). Match your build goal and harness setup.
- Plan for a timing belt and water pump replacement at install regardless of unit history. The H22A is an interference engine. A snapped belt destroys valves. Always replace these as wear items.
- For swap projects: Hasport mounts are the standard for Civic / Integra / CR-X / Del Sol H22A swaps. Plan for ECU, axles, shifter linkage, and harness conversion as part of the swap budget.
- OBD1 vs OBD2: An OBD1 H22A1 in an OBD2 chassis requires harness conversion or jumper. An OBD2 H22A in an OBD1 chassis requires similar conversion in the other direction.
- Type S and Type R variants are rare. If a seller offers a Type S at a redtop price, be cautious and ask for cam casting numbers and head identification.
- Plan for new spark plugs, valve cover gasket, and oil change at install.

Just installed the H22A from Vaz Auto Solutions in my Civic and it’s a beast. The power increase is noticeable and it’s been running without issues. Only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is a minor delay in shipping, but it was worth the wait!
Kenji T., Long Beach CA –
Bought a JDM H22A redtop from Vaz to replace mine after 280,000 miles on the original. They confirmed redtop OBD1 to match my 1995 Prelude, sent compression results (175 to 185 across all four), and disclosed the engine had about 65,000 km from a JDM Prelude. Engine arrived clean and complete. Fired on the third crank, VTEC engages right at 5,200 like it should, and it pulls hard to redline. Worth every penny.
Marco D., Newark NJ –
Sourced an H22A4 from Vaz for a Civic Si swap. They confirmed H22A4 OBD2 to match my Hasport mount kit and ECU plan, ran compression (180 to 190 across all four), and shipped crated. Swap took a weekend with a friend. Car now runs mid 13s in the quarter and pulls to 7,200 like the Prelude god intended. Vaz was patient with my swap questions and confirmed every detail before I paid.
