This module lives in a sealed aluminum enclosure with vibration insulation, connects through the multi-pin factory harness, and supports full OBD-II diagnostics. A failed module strands the vehicle, which is why the match-and-program steps below matter more than for any body part.
The symptoms include misfires, poor fuel economy, intermittent starting, erratic idle, and sudden stalling, usually with the check engine light on. The underlying causes are voltage events such as jump-start mistakes; water intrusion; internal driver-circuit failures; and corrosion at the connector.
