About the Nissan GT-R Engine

The VR38DETT is the heart of the Nissan GT-R R35 and one of the most respected production V6 engines of the 21st century. Hand assembled by Nissan's elite Takumi engine masters in a climate controlled cleanroom in Yokohama, every VR38DETT is a precision built unit that combines extreme power potential with daily driver reliability. The engine is a 3.8 liter (3,799 cc) DOHC 24-valve twin turbocharged V6 with a cast aluminum block, plasma sprayed cylinder bores (no cast iron sleeves, resulting in lighter weight and better heat transfer), forged pistons, forged connecting rods, and a forged crankshaft. The twin IHI turbochargers are integrated directly into the exhaust manifolds for better spool response and more compact packaging. An integrated air to liquid intercooler system maintains intake air temperature under boost conditions.

Critical: Year vs Power Output

Before you order, please be aware that the VR38DETT was produced from 2007 (Japan launch) through 2024 with significant power increases over the years. The live page lists a 2007 donor year with 565 hp output, but those two specs do not historically match. Here is the actual R35 power history:

  • 2007 R35 (Japan launch, CBA-R35): 480 hp
  • 2009 R35 (US launch, MY2009): 480 hp
  • 2011 to 2012 R35 (MY11/12): 530 hp
  • 2013 R35 (MY13): 545 hp
  • 2014 to 2016 R35 (MY14-16): 545 hp standard, 565 hp Premium
  • 2017 to 2024 R35 (MY17-24): 565 hp standard, 600 hp Nismo

If the engine truly produces 565 hp (verified via dyno or factory documentation), the donor is most likely a 2014 or later model year, not 2007. Please call (240) 301-0095 before ordering and we will provide the actual donor year, mileage, and history for the specific unit you are buying.

GT-R Drivetrain Layout (Important for Engine Swap Projects)

The GT-R R35 has an unusual drivetrain layout for engine swap projects. The engine sits at the front of the vehicle, but the transmission (GR6 6-speed dual clutch transaxle, designed by BorgWarner with Nissan) sits at the REAR of the vehicle, connected to the engine via a long carbon fiber driveshaft. This is done for weight balance (the heaviest components are split front and rear). The GR6 transaxle is sold separately and is NOT included with this engine sale. If you are doing a full GT-R engine swap, you will need both:

  • VR38DETT engine (this listing, $9,499)
  • GR6 dual clutch transaxle (separate listing or aftermarket alternative)
  • Carbon fiber driveshaft connecting them
  • Wiring harness and ECU (call to discuss what is included with your unit)
  • Engine mounts (custom if not OEM application)
  • Intercooler and plumbing
  • Fuel system upgrades for high power tune

Known VR38DETT Service Considerations

  • Bellhousing cracking at the transaxle interface (known issue on some early R35s, inspect carefully)
  • Connecting rod bearing wear at very high mileage (typical of high revving twin turbo engines)
  • Turbocharger wastegate actuator issues (can be replaced separately)
  • Plasma sprayed cylinder bore wear at extreme mileage (rare, only on very high mileage tracked cars)
  • Stock oil cooler is adequate for street use but track use benefits from supplementary cooling
  • Recommended service intervals: oil change every 3,500 miles for spirited driving, 5,000 miles for normal use

Pre Purchase Inspection Documentation

Given the $9,499 price point, we provide comprehensive pre purchase documentation on each VR38DETT unit:

  • Compression test results per cylinder (psi readings)
  • Leak-down test results per cylinder (percentage)
  • Oil pressure test at operating temperature
  • Donor vehicle mileage at time of removal
  • Donor vehicle history (where available, accident or maintenance records)
  • Photos of engine externals (timing covers, valve covers, oil pan, mounts)
  • Photos of running engine before removal (when available)
  • Turbocharger compressor and turbine wheel inspection

Can I use this engine in a non-GT-R platform or project car?
Absolutely. It is commonly used in engine swaps with proper aftermarket mounts and wiring solutions.
Are internals stock or modified?
Does the engine include a transmission?
What condition is the engine in?
Why does the listing say 2007 with 565 hp when the 2007 GT-R was 480 hp?
Is the R35 GT-R sold in the US from 2007?
What is the engine swap difficulty for VR38DETT into a non-GT-R?
