Description
About This Transmission
The NV5600 is the heavy duty 6 speed manual transmission produced by New Venture Gear (a division of Magna Powertrain) and used in 1999 to 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks behind the 5.9 liter Cummins turbo diesel and the 8.0 liter V10 Magnum. Designed specifically for the High Output 5.9 Cummins engine and its substantial torque output, the NV5600 brought a sixth gear overdrive, fully synchronized forward gears, and a torque rating of 540 lb-ft to the Dodge Ram lineup, replacing the NV4500 5 speed manual that had become the limiting factor in HO Cummins applications.
The NV5600 is a close ratio 6 speed, meaning the gear spacing between consecutive ratios is tighter than a wide ratio gearbox. First gear is 5.63:1 for steep grade and trailer launch duty. Fifth gear is direct drive (1:1). Sixth gear is a 0.73 overdrive that drops engine RPM at highway cruise. The case construction combines an aluminum integral clutch housing with a cast iron main case and tail housing. Total dry weight is approximately 360 pounds, making it heavier than the NV4500 by about 120 pounds.
New Venture Gear updated the NV5600 in 2001 with an upgraded clutch, a revised input shaft, and a redesigned synchronizer assembly. These updates were a direct response to reliability issues with early units, particularly under heavy towing and high mileage commercial duty. Post-2001 NV5600 units are noticeably more durable than pre-2001 units. For 2005.5, Dodge replaced the NV5600 entirely with the Mercedes G56 6 speed manual, ending the New Venture run.
A documented used OEM NV5600 with verified year, update status, and configuration is the right replacement for any 1999 to 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500 owner running the 5.9 Cummins or V10 Magnum. We document the year, post-2001 update status, engine pairing, and 2WD or 4WD configuration on every unit before shipping.
Signs You Need a Replacement Transmission
- Grinding into 1st or 2nd gear, common synchronizer wear on pre-2001 units
- Hard shifts requiring force, often a clutch master or slave cylinder issue, or worn synchronizer
- Pop out of gear under load, indicating worn shift forks or detent springs
- Whining or growling noise in 5th or 6th gear, bearing wear
- Burnt or contaminated fluid (dark or with metal particles)
- Difficulty engaging reverse, often a worn reverse synchronizer
- Cracked case or housing from impact or improper mounting
- Worn output shaft splines (29 spline yoke wear from extreme towing or mods)
Known Things to Know Before You Buy
- Pre-2001 vs post-2001 update: New Venture Gear updated the NV5600 in 2001 with improved synchronizers, an updated clutch, and a revised input shaft. Pre-2001 units have higher failure rates, particularly the synchronizer rings. Post-2001 units are meaningfully more reliable. We document the production year and update status on every unit.
- Fluid is specific: The NV5600 requires Mopar manual transmission fluid (PN 4874464). Substituting standard manual transmission fluid or gear oil causes premature synchronizer wear. Fluid capacity is approximately 9.5 quarts. We recommend a fluid change at install regardless of the unit history.
- Engine pairing: Most NV5600 transmissions came behind the 5.9 Cummins HO 24V (1999 to 2003) or 5.9 Cummins 600 / 305 hp (2003 to 2005). A small number were paired with the 8.0 liter V10 Magnum. Some 2004 Ram 1500 trucks with specific heavy duty towing packages received an NV5600.
- Bell housing: Integral aluminum bell housing with the SAE 1 pattern for the Cummins 5.9 and the V10 Magnum. NOT compatible with other engines without an adapter.
- 4WD adapter: 4WD NV5600s use the NP241DHD or NP271 transfer case adapter. The transmission case is the same; the tail housing changes for 4WD.
- Aftermarket short throw shifters: Many NV5600 owners install short throw shifters from companies such as B&M or G56. The factory NV5600 throw is long. We confirm the shifter is original at the time of pull.
- NV5600 vs NV4500: The NV4500 is a wide ratio 5 speed with direct 4th and a 0.73 overdrive 5th. The NV5600 is a close ratio 6 speed with direct 5th and a 0.73 overdrive 6th. The NV4500 is approximately 240 lbs vs the NV5600 at 360 lbs.

Used OEM vs Rebuilt vs Built NV5600
A documented used OEM NV5600 from a known donor (preferably 2001 or later for the post-update internals) is the most cost effective option for any 1999 to 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500 replacement. Pricing is roughly half to two thirds of a rebuilt unit. Our NV5600s are pressure tested, bench shifted through all 6 forward gears and reverse, and the year and update status are documented.
A professionally rebuilt NV5600 from a Cummins specialty shop typically runs $4,500 to $6,500 plus core charge. Standard rebuild includes new bearings, synchronizers, shift forks, gaskets, and seals. Most rebuilders incorporate the post-2001 improvements regardless of donor year. This is the right path for high mileage commercial trucks where the original is at end of service.
A built NV5600 with hardened input shaft, upgraded synchronizers, race clutch hardware, and verified internals targeting 800 plus lb-ft typically runs $7,500 to $11,000. Built makes sense for tuned 5.9 Cummins or competition pulling trucks where the stock 540 lb-ft rating is exceeded.
Condition and Inspection Process
- Pressure test on the bench, rotation through all 6 forward gears and reverse
- Bench shift test, all 6 forward gears and reverse engagement verified
- Synchronizer condition inspected on all gears, particularly 1st and 2nd
- Input shaft and bearing inspected for wear
- Output shaft and rear bearing inspected
- Case inspected for cracks, especially around the bell housing area
- Year and update status documented (pre-2001 or post-2001)
- Engine pairing confirmed (5.9 HO, 5.9 305 hp, V10 Magnum)
- 2WD or 4WD tail housing configuration confirmed
- Donor vehicle and verified mileage where available
Mileage on Dodge Ram donor trucks is documented from the truck odometer when available. Heavy duty commercial NV5600 transmissions often come from trucks with 200,000 plus miles. We disclose mileage clearly before shipping.
Buyer Tips, What to Know Before You Order
- Year matters: Post-2001 NV5600s are significantly more reliable than pre-2001 units due to the synchronizer and clutch update. If you have the choice, pick a 2001 or newer unit.
- Mopar fluid only: NV5600 requires the specific Mopar manual transmission fluid (PN 4874464). Standard MTF or gear oil will cause synchronizer failure.
- Plan for new clutch hardware at install. The clutch master, slave, and clutch assembly are wear items and should be refreshed any time the transmission is out of the truck.
- Tuned trucks need built units. A stock 5.9 Cummins puts out 235 to 305 hp from the factory. A tuned 5.9 with a larger turbo and injectors easily clears 500 hp and 1,000 lb-ft. The factory 540 lb-ft rated NV5600 will not survive that long term. Plan for an upgraded unit.
- Short throw shifters from B&M or aftermarket suppliers are popular and well documented. Stock NV5600 throw is long. Plan for this if you want a sportier feel.
- 4WD vs 2WD: Confirm before ordering. Tail housing differs.
- NV5600 weighs 360 lbs. Plan for proper lifting equipment at install.

Got the NV5600 from Vaz Auto Solutions. It’s solid and handles heavy loads with ease. The only hiccup was a slight delay in the shipment, but overall, I’m very satisfied with the purchase. Worth the investment!
Eric W., Tulsa OK –
Picked up an NV5600 for my pre-update 2001 Ram 3500. Vaz pulled a 2003 unit for me, post-2001 improved synchros, and confirmed it had been pressure tested. Half star off because shipping took 11 business days, but the transmission is solid. Pulling our company horse trailer at 12,000 lbs and shifting clean.
Ryan D., Spokane WA –
Bought an NV5600 from Vaz to replace mine after 1st gear synchronizer destroyed itself at 245,000 miles. They confirmed post-2001 update status, came out of a 2004 Ram 3500. Pressure tested before shipping. Bench shift test results sent over before I paid. Bolted right up. Pulling my 14,000 lb camper across Idaho without issues. Worth every penny.
