Description

About This Transmission

The Ford 4R100 is the heavy duty 4 speed automatic transmission that powered the Ford Super Duty truck line, Excursion SUV, and E-Series vans from 1998 through 2004. Introduced in 1998 as the direct successor to the E4OD, the 4R100 was specifically designed to handle the massive torque output of the 7.3L Power Stroke diesel as well as the 6.8L Triton V10, the 5.4L Triton V8, and the 6.0L Power Stroke (early 6.0 applications).

The 4R100 carries a stock torque rating of approximately 535 lb-ft when paired with the 7.3L Power Stroke and was the workhorse transmission of one of the most respected diesel pickup combinations ever built. Where the E4OD struggled with the 7.3L torque output and developed a reputation for failure, the 4R100 brought a billet input shaft, a heavy duty torque converter, an electronic Tow/Haul mode, and revised valve body calibration that dramatically improved durability under load.

The 4R100 was replaced by the 5R110W TorqShift starting in 2003 for the 6.0L Power Stroke and fully phased out by 2005, but it remains the transmission of choice for 7.3L Power Stroke owners who prefer a 4 speed simplicity and the fully mechanical 7.3 to 4R100 combination.

Signs You Need a Replacement Transmission

  • Slipping in 1st or 2nd gear, often a sign of clutch pack wear
  • Hard 3 to 4 shift or no overdrive engagement, common at high mileage
  • Torque converter shudder under lockup load
  • Burnt fluid (dark, smells acrid)
  • Limp mode, transmission stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear
  • Cracked case, common on units that have been overpowered or improperly mounted
  • Overheating on towing duty, indicating worn pump or contaminated fluid

Known Things to Know Before You Buy

  • Diesel vs gas input shaft: The 7.3L Power Stroke and 6.0L Power Stroke 4R100 has a 31 spline input shaft. The gas 6.8L V10 and 5.4L 4R100 has a 26 spline input shaft. They are not interchangeable without changing the input shaft. We confirm spline count before every order.
  • Tow/Haul mode wiring: Tow/Haul is electronically controlled by the PCM. The 4R100 itself supports Tow/Haul; the dash button and wiring must be present on the donor truck.
  • Early 6.0L 4R100 vs 5R110W: The early 2003 6.0L Power Stroke trucks used a 4R100. The 5R110W TorqShift took over later in 2003 and continued through 2007. If you have an early 6.0, a 4R100 is correct. Late 2003 onward 6.0 trucks need a 5R110W.
  • 4WD adapter: 4WD 4R100s use a transfer case adapter to mate to the BorgWarner 4406 or 4407 transfer case. We confirm 2WD vs 4WD configuration on every order.
  • Banjo bolt seals and cooler line fittings: Always replace these at install.

Used OEM vs Rebuilt vs Built 4R100

A used OEM 4R100 from a 7.3L Power Stroke or 6.8L V10 donor with verified pressure test and shift test results is the most cost effective option for most replacement projects. Our 4R100s are pressure tested, shift tested, and the engine pairing and spline count are documented.

A professionally rebuilt 4R100 typically runs $2,800 to $6,500 depending on engine pairing and rebuild specification. Standard rebuild includes new clutches, bands, seals, and a re manufactured torque converter. Rebuilt 7.3L versions cost more due to the higher specification components.

A built 4R100 (BD Diesel, Suncoast, ATS Stage 5) is rated for 700 to 1,200 hp and runs $5,500 to $9,000. This is the right path for tuned 7.3 or 6.0 Power Stroke trucks running deletes, larger turbos, or sled pull duty.

Condition and Inspection Process

  • Pressure test on the dyno bench, line pressure recorded across all gears
  • Shift test on the dyno bench, all 4 forward gears, reverse, and overdrive engagement tested
  • Torque converter inspected for lockup clutch condition
  • Valve body and electronic solenoid pack tested
  • Internal harness inspected for damage
  • Case inspected for cracks, output shaft for runout, splines for wear
  • Input shaft spline count confirmed (31 spline diesel or 26 spline gas)
  • 4WD adapter or 2WD tail housing configuration documented
  • Donor vehicle engine pairing confirmed

Mileage is documented when available from the donor vehicle. Where mileage cannot be confirmed (salvage), we disclose this before shipping.

Buyer Tips, What to Know Before You Order

  • Spline count first: A 31 spline 7.3 Power Stroke transmission is not the same as a 26 spline V10 transmission. They are not cross compatible without an input shaft swap.
  • Tow/Haul mode requires correct PCM and dash wiring. Confirm before installation.
  • Plan a complete fluid flush at install regardless of unit condition. Mercon V only.
  • Cooler line and pan gasket should be replaced at install.
  • 7.3L Power Stroke trucks running tunes or modifications above stock should consider a built 4R100 to handle increased torque. A stock used unit will live behind a stock truck. A tuned truck will eventually fail a stock unit.

4 reviews for Ford 4R100 Transmission for Sale | 4 Speed Heavy Duty Automatic, 1998 to 2004

  1. Walter K., Lubbock TX

Bought a 4R100 from Vaz to replace mine after the original blew at 287,000 miles. Vaz confirmed 31 spline input for my 7.3, came out of a 2002 F-350 with verified mileage. Pressure tested and shift tested before shipping. Bolted right up. Two months in, towing my fifth wheel and shifting cleaner than the original ever did.

  2. Christopher Adams (verified owner)

I purchased the Ford 4R100 transmission from Vaz Auto Solutions for my F-250. It’s a robust transmission, smooth shifts, and has significantly improved towing capabilities. Very satisfied with the quality and service

  3. Charles Martin (verified owner)

The Ford 4R100 transmission from Vaz Auto Solutions has been a game-changer for my F-350. It handles heavy loads effortlessly, shifts smoothly, and feels like a new truck. Couldn’t be happier with my purchase

  4. Trent M., Asheville NC

Picked up a 4R100 for my V10 Excursion after the original started slipping in 3rd. Vaz confirmed 26 spline input matched my V10 and pulled it from a comparable Excursion. Tow/Haul wiring and PCM stayed in my truck so the swap was straightforward. Towing my 28 foot camper without issues. Half star off because the install took my shop two days; freight shipping took the full 10 business days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicles use the Ford 4R100 transmission?

Ford F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 Super Duty (1999 to 2004), Ford Excursion (2000 to 2005), Ford F-150 Heavy Duty (1999 only), Ford E-250, E-350, and E-450 vans (1998 to 2004), and Ford F-Series stripped chassis applications. The 4R100 is most commonly paired with the 7.3L Power Stroke, 6.8L V10, and 5.4L Triton.

What is the difference between the E4OD and the 4R100?

The 4R100 directly replaced the E4OD in 1998. The 4R100 has the same basic case footprint but with several improvements: a billet input shaft on diesel applications, a heavier duty torque converter, an electronic Tow/Haul mode, revised valve body calibration, and improved electronics. Many parts interchange but the case casting, valve body, and wiring harness are unique to the 4R100.

My truck has a 7.3L Power Stroke. Will any 4R100 fit?

No. The 7.3L Power Stroke pairs with the 31 spline input shaft 4R100. A 26 spline 4R100 (built for 6.8L V10 or 5.4L V8) will not fit a 7.3L without changing the input shaft. We confirm spline count on every order.

Will a 4R100 fit my 2003 6.0L Power Stroke F-250?

It depends on the build date. Early 2003 6.0L Power Stroke trucks used a 4R100. Mid 2003 onward, Ford switched to the 5R110W TorqShift. Check your VIN or Ford build date. We help confirm.

Is there a core charge?

No. You are not required to return your old transmission under any circumstance.

How does Tow/Haul mode work?

Tow/Haul is electronically controlled by the truck PCM. When activated by the dash button, it modifies shift points to delay upshifts and downshift earlier under engine braking, reducing transmission and brake heat under heavy load. The transmission itself supports Tow/Haul; the dash button and wiring must be present on the donor vehicle.

What fluid does the 4R100 use?

Mercon V automatic transmission fluid. Capacity is approximately 15.9 to 16.4 quarts dry fill. Always replace fluid and filter at installation regardless of unit condition.

How does shipping work?

Free freight pallet delivery to all 50 US states. Typical transit 5 to 10 business days. No residential surcharges. Call with your ZIP code for an accurate timeline.
