Description
About This Engine
The Lamborghini Gallardo 5.0 V10 is the naturally aspirated ten-cylinder engine that powered Lamborghini's most successful production car in history from its introduction in 2003 through the 2008 model year. Developed by Lamborghini's engineering team under the technical leadership of Maurizio Reggiani after Audi's acquisition of the brand in 1998, it was the first all-new engine developed by Lamborghini under Volkswagen Group ownership. The block and crankcase are manufactured at Audi Hungaria in Gyor, Hungary, with final engine assembly performed at Sant'Agata Bolognese- the same production model used for subsequent Lamborghini V10 and V12 engines.
The 5.0L V10's defining technical feature is its even firing interval. A conventional 90-degree V10 naturally produces alternating firing intervals of 72 and 108 degrees. Lamborghini's engineers addressed this by using split crankpins- crankshaft journal pairs offset by 18 degrees- creating even 72-degree firing intervals throughout the firing sequence. This produces an even engine note at all RPM rather than the uneven burble of an uncorrected 90-degree V10. The result is one of the most distinctive engine sounds of any production car of its era.
The 5.0L was succeeded by the 5.2L version from the 2009 Gallardo facelift onward. The 5.2L uses a larger 84.5mm bore (vs 82.5mm) and changed crankpin geometry, producing uneven firing intervals and a different sound character. Internal components between the 5.0L and 5.2L are largely not interchangeable- particularly the crankshaft, pistons, and cylinder block.
Signs You Need a Replacement Engine
- Oil consumption above Lamborghini specification- internal seal deterioration on high-mileage examples
- Dry sump oiling system anomalies- external oil pump or scavenge pump indicators
- Variable valve timing fault codes- actuator wear on high-mileage units
- Oil leaks at cam cover gaskets- common on aged V10 engines across all applications
- Check engine lights with individual cylinder misfire codes- coil-on-plug or injector failure
- Unusual engine note or loss of high-RPM smoothness- potentially cam timing related
Known Problems With This Engine
- 5.0L vs 5.2L incompatibility: The 5.0L (82.5mm bore, split crankpins, 88mm bore spacing) and 5.2L (84.5mm bore, shared crankpins, 90mm bore spacing) are significantly different internally. Crankshafts, pistons, and blocks are NOT interchangeable. Ordering the wrong variant results in incompatible components. We confirm 5.0L vs 5.2L before every order.
- Dry sump system complexity: The 5-pump dry sump oiling system requires the external tank, scavenge lines, and all pumps to be inspected and serviced at engine replacement. These components are not included with the engine and must be sourced separately or reused if in good condition.
- Specialist installation required: Gallardo engine replacement requires a Lamborghini-specialist shop. The mid-engine architecture, dry sump integration, e-gear clutch actuator (if applicable), and ECU adaptation are not standard repair procedures.
- ECU calibration: The Lamborghini V10 ECU is specific to the Gallardo's variant (540 hp Superleggera vs 493 hp base) and may require recalibration when a replacement engine is installed. Confirm with your specialist shop.
- Cam chain and variable timing: The chain-driven camshaft system with variable valve timing requires proper oil quality and pressure to function correctly. Extended oil change intervals cause VVT actuator wear and cam chain guide deterioration.

Used OEM vs Rebuilt- Which Is Right for You?
Used OEM is the only practical path for Gallardo engine replacement. New factory engines are not available through standard dealer channels. Specialist rebuild pricing from Italian exotic specialists runs $20,000 to $40,000 or more. Our inspected, documented units represent the most practical verified replacement available.
A specialist rebuild makes sense for a concours restoration or high-output build. Lamborghini specialists can rebuild the 5.0 V10 with fresh tolerances and updated seals. Call us for current unit condition assessment.
Condition and Inspection Process
- Full external inspection of all accessible engine surfaces
- 5.0L vs 5.2L variant confirmed- bore size and crankpin configuration identified before shipping
- Year and specific Gallardo application documented- Superleggera vs base spec noted where determinable
- Dry sump connection points and oil pump area inspected
- Cam cover and external gasket surfaces inspected for oil seepage
- Mileage documented where available from Gallardo service records
Mileage varies by unit. Where available from the donor vehicle we provide it. Where it cannot be confirmed, we disclose this before your order is placed.
Buyer Tips- What to Know Before You Order
- 5.0L vs 5.2L is the critical question- ask before ordering: The two versions have different bores, different crankshafts, different bore spacing, and different pistons. They are not interchangeable. Confirm your Gallardo's year- 2003 to 2008 is 5.0L, 2009 onward is 5.2L.
- Dry sump system service: The entire dry sump system (5 scavenge pumps, external tank, oil lines) must be inspected and serviced at engine replacement. These are not included with the engine.
- Specialist shop required: Gallardo engine replacement is not a general shop job. A Lamborghini specialist or Lamborghini-authorized independent shop is required for this work.
- Documentation value: A Gallardo with complete engine provenance documentation commands a premium. Request all available service documentation for the unit.
- E-gear system: If your Gallardo has the e-gear (electrohydraulic automated manual), the clutch actuator system must be inspected and bled as part of the engine replacement process. This is separate from the engine itself.

My Gallardo needed an engine replacement after a catastrophic oiling system failure. Vaz confirmed the 5.0L variant (not the 5.2 from the later facelift) and documented the year-specific Spyder application before I committed. Full external inspection documentation provided. My Lamborghini specialist confirmed the engine matched the documentation on arrival. An exceptional find for such a rare engine.

Sourcing a documented 5.0 V10 for my Superleggera was the most stressful part of the rebuild. Vaz confirmed the 5.0L variant and noted the Superleggera-specific calibration consideration before I bought. Dry sump connection points inspected. Minor cam cover seep disclosed before shipping. Lamborghini specialist confirmed the engine. Good documentation for an engine this rare.
