Description

About This Transmission

The Ford 10R80 is the 10 speed longitudinal automatic transmission that powers the modern F-150, Mustang GT and GT500, Bronco, Raptor, Ranger, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator. Co-developed by Ford and General Motors starting in 2013 and introduced to the market in 2017 in the F-150 and Mustang GT, the 10R80 replaced the 6R80 6 speed and immediately became the highest gear count automatic ever offered in a Ford pickup or pony car.

The 10 forward gears, wide 7.4 to 1 ratio span, integrated lockup torque converter, and direct acting solenoids deliver smoother acceleration, faster part throttle response, and meaningfully better highway fuel economy than the 6R80 it replaced. The unit is rated for up to 700 lb-ft of stock torque and aftermarket built versions support up to 1,000 horsepower without changing clutch capacity.

The 10R80 is found in the Ford F-150 (2017 onward), F-150 Raptor (2017 onward), Mustang GT (2018 onward), Mustang GT500 (2020 onward), Mustang Mach 1, Bronco (2021 onward), Ranger (2019 onward), Expedition (2018 onward), Lincoln Navigator (2018 onward), and Aviator. It is the universal Ford rear wheel drive automatic of this generation.

Signs You Need a Replacement Transmission

  • Torque converter shudder, common on early 2017 to 2019 units (well documented in TSB 19-2155, TSB 20-2331)
  • Harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts that cannot be calmed by a re flash
  • Bind in reverse or delayed engagement after shift to drive
  • Ratcheting noise on light throttle, often a sign of internal valve body wear
  • Slipping under load (most common after high mileage on towing or modified applications)
  • Loss of one or more gears (limp mode)
  • Cracked case from impact or off road damage

Known Problems With This Transmission

  • Torque converter shudder (2017 to 2019): The most common 10R80 complaint. Caused by internal lockup clutch material that breaks down with age and contaminates the fluid. Ford issued multiple TSBs (most recently TSB 20-2331). Fix is typically a torque converter replacement plus complete fluid flush. We inspect torque converter condition and disclose status on every unit.
  • Harsh shift complaints: Early 2017 to 2018 units shipped with calibration that produced harsh 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. Ford released calibration updates. A used unit may need a re flash to current calibration when installed.
  • Valve body wear: At very high mileage (150,000 plus) the valve body solenoid pack can develop irregular pressure modulation, causing flare on shifts. We pressure test every unit.
  • Pump cavitation on neglected fluid units: 10R80s with overdue fluid service can develop pump cavitation noise. We document fluid condition before shipping.
  • Calibration mismatch: A 2017 calibration will not run optimally with a 2022 vehicle and vice versa. We disclose calibration year so your shop knows what to flash.

10R80 Variants by Year and Application

Year matching matters for ECU and TCM calibration:

Year Application Notes
2017 to 2018 F-150 (3.5 EB, 5.0L), Mustang GT, Expedition Original release. Highest TSB activity.
2019 to 2020 F-150, Ranger, Mustang, Expedition, Aviator Updated calibration, improved shift logic.
2020 onward GT500 (HO calibration), Raptor R, Tremor Higher torque calibration.
2021 onward Bronco, F-150 (refresh) Latest calibration generation.
2024 onward Mustang Dark Horse, F-150 refresh Most current spec.
Year matching matters for ECU and TCM calibration. We document the exact year and TCM calibration code on every unit so your shop knows what to flash.

Used OEM vs Rebuilt vs Aftermarket Built

A used OEM 10R80 from a low mileage donor with verified torque converter condition is the most cost effective option for stock or mildly modified F-150, Mustang, Bronco, or Raptor applications. Pricing is roughly one third to one fifth of a built or rebuilt unit. Our 10R80s are pressure tested, shift tested, and the torque converter condition is documented.

A professionally rebuilt 10R80 with updated calibration, upgraded clutch packs, and a new torque converter typically runs $4,500 to $7,500. This is the right path for a high mileage F-150 or for a tow vehicle.

An aftermarket built 10R80 (Project Carbon, PowerTech, Suncoast) is rated for 1,000 horsepower plus and runs $6,500 to $14,000. This is for boosted Coyote, GT500, or Raptor R builds where the stock unit is at the edge of its capacity.

Condition and Inspection Process

  • Pressure test on the dyno bench, line pressure recorded across all gears
  • Shift test on the dyno bench, all 10 forward gears and reverse cycled
  • Torque converter inspected for shudder material, lockup clutch condition disclosed
  • Valve body solenoid pack tested for proper actuation
  • Internal harness inspected for damage
  • Case inspected for cracks, output shaft for runout, splines for wear
  • Year and TCM calibration code documented
  • Donor vehicle and mileage disclosed where available

Mileage is documented when available from the donor vehicle. Where mileage cannot be confirmed (salvage), we disclose this before shipping.

Buyer Tips, What to Know Before You Order

  • Year matching matters: A 2017 unit installed in a 2022 vehicle will need a TCM re flash. Plan for this with your shop.
  • Torque converter is the single most common 10R80 failure point. Even on a healthy unit, plan for a complete fluid flush at install. On 2017 to 2019 units, plan for a torque converter replacement as preventive maintenance for towing or hard use.
  • RWD vs 4WD: Confirm before ordering. Tail housing and adapter differ.
  • Mercon ULV only: Do not substitute. Wrong fluid causes immediate shudder and clutch failure.
  • TCM stays with the vehicle: A used 10R80 does not include a TCM. The vehicle TCM controls the new transmission. A re flash is typically required for calibration matching.

4 reviews for Ford 10R80 Transmission for Sale | 10 Speed Automatic, RWD and 4WD

  1. Tom (verified owner)

Picked up the 10R80 from Vaz Auto Solutions. Smooth shifts, great performance upgrade for my Mustang. Couldn’t be happier.

  2. davis (verified owner)

Installed the 10R80 in my F-150. It’s like driving a new truck! Vaz Auto Solutions delivered quality and reliability.

  3. Justin O., Tampa FL

Sourced a 4WD 10R80 from Vaz for a 5.2 Predator swap project. Vaz confirmed the calibration matched my donor harness, output shaft was correct for my driveshaft, and torque converter was healthy. Bench shift test results were sent over before I paid. Install was clean and the transmission has been flawless behind 750 horsepower.

  4. Marcus L., Cleveland OH

Bought a 10R80 from Vaz to replace mine after the torque converter shudder got bad enough to be unsafe under load. Vaz inspected the converter on the replacement unit and confirmed it was clean. Year matching was 2019, my truck is 2018 so my dealer flashed the TCM at install. Truck shifts smooth as new now. Paid less than half what a rebuilt unit would have cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicles use the Ford 10R80 transmission?

Ford F-150 and Raptor (2017 onward), Mustang GT, Mach 1, GT500, Dark Horse (2018 onward), Bronco and Bronco Raptor (2021 onward), Ranger and Ranger Raptor (2019 onward), Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, and Lincoln Aviator. The 10R80 replaced the 6R80 in nearly every Ford rear wheel drive application.

Is the 10R80 the same as the GM 10L80?

They were co-developed by Ford and GM. Architecture is similar, but case castings, internal calibration, and several component part numbers differ. They are not fully interchangeable. We supply the Ford 10R80 specifically.

Will a 2017 10R80 work in my 2022 F-150?

The transmission bolts in physically, but the TCM calibration must be matched. Plan for a TCM re flash at a Ford dealer or with a tuner familiar with 10R80 calibration. We document the donor year and calibration code so your shop knows what to do.

How serious is the torque converter shudder issue?

It is real and well documented. Ford issued multiple TSBs (TSB 19-2155, TSB 20-2331). The fix is a complete fluid flush plus, on heavily affected units, a torque converter replacement. We inspect torque converter condition on every unit and disclose status before shipping.

What is the torque rating?

Stock factory rating is up to 700 lb-ft. Aftermarket built units (Project Carbon, PowerTech, Suncoast) are rated up to 1,000 horsepower without increasing clutch capacity.

Is there a core charge?

No. You are not required to return your old transmission under any circumstance.

RWD or 4WD, what do I need?

The 10R80 case is identical, but RWD and 4WD use different tail housings and adapters. We confirm configuration before every order ships. Tell us your year, model, and trim and we will match it.

What fluid does the 10R80 use?

Mercon ULV (Ultra Low Viscosity) only. Do not substitute. Mercon LV, V, or any other fluid will cause shudder and clutch failure. Capacity is approximately 11.5 quarts dry fill.
