Description

About This Engine

The Subaru EG33 is the rarest and most unique engine Subaru ever put into a production car. Built exclusively for the Alcyone SVX from 1991 to 1996, it is a 3.3-liter DOHC horizontally opposed flat-six- essentially a six-cylinder version of Subaru's EJ22 four-cylinder, sharing the same 96.9mm bore and 75.0mm stroke but adding two more cylinders and upgrading from SOHC to DOHC valvetrain. The result was 230 horsepower delivered smoothly across a broad RPM range through a unique twin-throttle body intake system.

The EG33 was the largest engine Subaru had ever produced for a passenger car until the EZ36 appeared in the 2008 Tribeca. Its thick-walled aluminum cylinder block with iron liners- unlike the thinner-walled EZ-series engines that followed- made it more resistant to deformation under forced induction loads. Turbocharged EG33 builds capable of handling several hundred horsepower have been documented in the performance community.

Finding a clean EG33 is the limiting factor in most SVX restoration and swap projects. The entire supply comes from a small production run of SVX vehicles between 1991 and 1996. Every year that passes, supply tightens further. A compression-tested unit in documented condition is a significant find.

Signs You Need a Replacement Engine

  • Burning oil on startup- head gasket seepage or valve seal wear, more common on high-mileage EG33 units
  • Rough running or misfiring on one or more cylinders- injector failure or ignition issue specific to the twin-throttle system
  • Oil leaks at the cam covers- a common high-mileage EG33 characteristic
  • Coolant in the oil- head gasket concern, worth checking on any EG33 with unknown service history
  • Loss of power under load without obvious misfire- throttle position sensor or mass airflow sensor failure

Known Problems With This Engine

  • Head gasket vulnerability: While not as severe as the EJ-series issues, EG33 head gaskets can develop seepage on high-mileage units- particularly those that were overheated at any point. We inspect coolant condition and check for cross-contamination before shipping.
  • Twin throttle system complexity: The EG33 uses a unique twin throttle body intake. Throttle position sensors and associated electronics are specific to this engine and can develop issues on aged units.
  • Open-deck block design: The EG33 uses an open-deck block for lighter weight and better cooling, but this makes cylinder bores less rigid under high-boost forced induction. For extreme power builds, closed-deck conversion sleeves are available from aftermarket sources.
  • Mounting and accessory differences: The EG33 uses different engine mounts, wiring harness connectors, and accessory drive layout from EJ-series engines. Swapping into a non-SVX Subaru requires adapter mounts, custom wiring, and custom accessory drive work.
  • Sourcing difficulty: All EG33 supply comes from 1991 to 1996 SVX vehicles only. Supply is limited and tightening annually.

What Is Included- What Is Not Included

INCLUDED- Long Block Engine block and heads, crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, camshafts, valve train. Intake manifold and twin throttle body assembly where present on donor unit. Water pump where present.
NOT INCLUDED Fuel injectors (unless noted), ignition coils, ECU and wiring harness, alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor, automatic transmission, axles, accessory brackets.
Core Note No core charge. You are not required to return your old engine.

Vehicle Compatibility- Direct Fit

The Subaru EG33 was factory installed exclusively in the following vehicle:

Subaru Alcyone SVX (SVX in North America) 1991 to 1996- AWD and FWD versions. Automatic transmission only in factory configuration.
Swap Applications Popular swap into WRX, STI, Impreza, Legacy, and custom RWD builds. Requires custom mounts, wiring, and supporting components.

The EG33 shares bore and stroke dimensions with the EJ22 but uses a completely different block casting and is longer than EJ-series engines. Swapping into a non-SVX Subaru requires custom engine mounts, a custom wiring harness or adapter, and custom accessory drive work. The performance community has documented numerous successful swaps. Call us if you are planning a swap and we will advise on what to verify.

Transmission compatibility: Factory paired exclusively with the 4EAT 4-speed automatic in both FWD and AWD configurations. No factory manual transmission option was ever offered. Aftermarket and custom transmission adaptations are possible but require specialized engineering.

Not sure if this fits? Call (240) 301-0095 with your year, make, model, and current drivetrain. We verify fitment before every order ships.

Used OEM vs Rebuilt vs Aftermarket- Which Is Right for You?

Used OEM is the only practical option for most EG33 projects. New units do not exist. Rebuilt EG33 engines from the handful of specialists who work on them typically run $3,000 to $6,000 or more. Our tested used OEM units represent the most cost-effective verified starting point.

A specialist EG33 rebuild makes sense for a serious SVX restoration or high-power swap build where fresh tolerances are required. The EG33 specialist community is small but dedicated- connect with SVX forums for rebuild shop recommendations.

Condition and Inspection Process

  • Compression test across all 6 cylinders- results per cylinder recorded before shipping
  • Head gasket condition check- coolant and oil inspected for cross-contamination
  • Cam cover and external seal inspection for leaks
  • Twin throttle body inspection for throttle shaft wear and sensor condition
  • Block and head inspection for cracks and external damage
  • Mileage documented where available from donor vehicle service records

Mileage varies by unit. Where available from the donor vehicle we provide it. Where mileage cannot be confirmed, we disclose this before your order is placed.

Buyer Tips- What to Know Before You Order

  • ECU compatibility: The EG33 ECU is specific to the SVX and manages the twin throttle body system. For a direct SVX replacement, always use the matching ECU. For swap applications, a custom engine management system will be needed.
  • Transmission: No manual transmission was ever factory offered. All SVX units used the 4EAT automatic. Adapting a different transmission requires custom bell housing and fabrication.
  • Cooling system: Service the entire cooling system when installing a used EG33. The SVX cooling system is more complex than typical Subaru four-cylinder layouts.
  • Swap planning: The EG33 is longer than EJ-series engines. Verify engine bay clearance carefully before purchasing for a swap application.
  • Ignition service: Coil packs and spark plugs on an SVX are frequently overdue for replacement on high-mileage examples. Budget for a full ignition service during installation.

  1. Jason Clark (verified owner)

The Subaru EG33 engine from Vaz Auto Solutions is an absolute powerhouse! The performance is exhilarating, with smooth power delivery and impressive torque. It has completely transformed my driving experience, offering a thrilling ride with incredible reliability. If you’re after top-tier performance, this engine is definitely worth it!

  2. Kevin Foster (verified owner)

Installed the Subaru EG33 engine from Vaz Auto Solutions. It’s a solid engine with good performance, though it’s not as groundbreaking as I expected. It provides reliable power and runs smoothly, but the upgrade didn’t add a dramatic boost. It’s a practical choice for enhanced performance without major surprises.

  3. Jason W., Denver CO

Finding a solid EG33 took me months. Vaz had one compression tested and ready. All 6 cylinders came back within 8 psi of each other — outstanding for a used flat-six with unknown mileage. They also flagged that the cam cover gaskets were seeping before shipping which I addressed at install. Best possible outcome for a hard-to-find engine.

  4. Marcus L., Seattle WA

Bought an EG33 for a custom swap project. Vaz was upfront that mileage could not be confirmed from donor vehicle records but compression was strong across all 6. Engine arrived well packed. One coil pack connector showed corrosion — minor issue disclosed before shipping. Good experience buying a genuinely rare engine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicle does the EG33 engine fit?

The EG33 was produced exclusively for and used exclusively in the Subaru Alcyone SVX, sold as the SVX in North America from 1992 to 1997. It was fitted to both FWD and AWD variants with the 4EAT automatic transmission. No other production vehicle ever used this engine.

How does the EG33 compare to the EJ22?

The EG33 shares bore (96.9mm) and stroke (75.0mm) with the EJ22 but adds two more cylinders and upgrades from SOHC to DOHC heads. The result is 3.3L vs 2.2L displacement and 230 hp vs approximately 135 hp. The EG33 also uses a unique twin throttle body intake system not found on any EJ engine.

Can the EG33 be turbocharged?

Yes. The EG33 block with iron liners is more robust under boost than the thinner-walled EZ-series engines. Turbocharged EG33 builds producing several hundred horsepower have been documented in the community.

Was there ever a manual transmission for the SVX?

No. The SVX was only offered with the 4EAT automatic in all markets.

Is there a core charge?

No.

Can the EG33 be swapped into other Subarus?

Yes, and it is a popular project. Custom engine mounts, wiring, and accessory drive work are required. The EG33 is longer than EJ-series engines so verify clearance in your target bay. SVX forums have detailed swap guides.
