Description

About the Chrysler Pacifica Ignition Switch

CRITICAL: Two completely different Chrysler Pacifica vehicles. (1) ORIGINAL Pacifica 2004-2008 (CS platform mid-size crossover wagon, engines 3.5L/4.0L V6, failed in market and discontinued). (2) NEW Pacifica 2017-current (RU platform FULL MINIVAN, replaced Town and Country, 3.6L Pentastar V6, includes Hybrid PHEV variant).

Ignition systems differ significantly: Original = traditional KEY-BASED ignition with cylinder lock. New = PUSH-BUTTON START STANDARD with smart key fob system (no physical key cylinder). Pacifica Hybrid PHEV = plug-in hybrid 2017+ with electric motor and battery.

Customer must specify which Pacifica. Original: cylinder lock, key tumbler, electrical switch. New: push-button assembly, smart key reader, BCM-integrated functions. Tested for smooth operation, electrical contacts, security integration.

2 reviews for Chrysler Pacifica Ignition Switch for Sale | CRITICAL: Two different Pacificas

  1. Anastasios Christophides-Konstantinou

Replaced ignition cylinder on my 2007 Original Chrysler Pacifica (CS platform crossover wagon, 4.0L V6 higher-output trim). Key had become very hard to turn and was starting to wear out. Vaz educated me on the Two Pacificas distinction – I had no idea the 2017+ minivan revived the same name. Sourced cylinder lock from 2008 Pacifica donor with proper key tumbler condition. Tested for smooth operation through all positions. Took locksmith to cut key matching my existing key set. The CS platform co

  2. Kunigunde Hassenpflug-Treuherz

Bought push-button start assembly for my 2018 New Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid (RU minivan, PHEV variant). Vaz emphasized the New vs Original Pacifica distinction (completely different vehicles) and the Hybrid PHEV context (my plug-in hybrid uses same ignition as standard New Pacifica). Sourced from 2019 non-hybrid Pacifica Touring L donor. Push button tested for response. One star off because installation required dealer trip for smart key authentication after replacement – the BCM needed to regist

Frequently Asked Questions

How many different Chrysler Pacificas are there?

TWO completely different Chrysler Pacifica vehicles across different eras: (1) ORIGINAL CHRYSLER PACIFICA 2004-2008 – mid-size crossover wagon built on CS platform, more SUV-like with some minivan elements, engines 3.5L V6 and 4.0L V6, 5 model years of production, failed in market and discontinued after 2008. (2) NEW CHRYSLER PACIFICA 2017-current – FULL MINIVAN built on RU platform, completely different vehicle type, revived the Pacifica name when Chrysler launched their new minivan to replace the Town and Country, 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine, includes Pacifica Hybrid PHEV variant. These two vehicles share the name but are completely different – different platforms, different body types, different engines, different markets, different eras. The name lay dormant 2008-2017.

What ignition system does each have?

ORIGINAL PACIFICA 2004-2008: Traditional KEY-BASED ignition switch with steering column cylinder lock. Driver inserts physical key, turns through Off/Accessory/Run/Start positions. Electrical switch section engages various vehicle circuits at each position. Similar to most cars of that era. NEW PACIFICA 2017+: PUSH-BUTTON START STANDARD across all trims (no traditional key cylinder). Driver carries smart key fob in pocket or bag (proximity sensor detects fob within vehicle), presses brake pedal and push-button to start. No physical key insertion needed. BCM (Body Control Module) authenticates smart key via RFID. Component called ‘ignition switch’ on New Pacifica refers to push-button start assembly, smart key reader, or BCM-integrated functions.

What was wrong with the Original Pacifica?

The Original Pacifica 2004-2008 had multiple market positioning issues that led to its discontinuation: (1) AWKWARD POSITIONING between minivan, SUV, and station wagon – not clearly any segment. (2) PRICED TOO HIGH for what consumers perceived as value. (3) FUEL ECONOMY POOR for the size (large vehicle with V6 power but no fuel economy advantage over minivans of the era). (4) NOT GENUINE MINIVAN despite some minivan features (some had sliding doors but not full minivan layout). (5) NOT GENUINE SUV despite SUV-like styling (didn’t offer true SUV capability). (6) COMPETED WITH Chrysler’s own Town and Country minivan internally. Sales were disappointing throughout 5-year production. Chrysler discontinued after 2008. The name was retired until being revived for the completely different 2017 minivan.

What's the Pacifica Hybrid?

The Pacifica Hybrid (introduced 2017 alongside the New Pacifica) is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variant of the New Pacifica minivan. Specifications: (1) 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine + electric motor + 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. (2) Approximately 32-33 mile EV-only driving range (drive on electric power alone for shorter trips). (3) Combined fuel economy approximately 82 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) when running on electricity. (4) Charges via standard plug (120V household or 240V Level 2 faster charging). (5) Front-wheel-drive (Hybrid not available with AWD due to packaging). (6) Available across most New Pacifica trim levels. (7) Same ignition system as standard New Pacifica (push-button start). Significant fuel economy improvement over standard 3.6L V6 Pacifica, ideal for families with short daily commutes who can charge at home.

How do I diagnose ignition switch problems?

Symptoms vary by generation: ORIGINAL PACIFICA 2004-2008: (1) Key HARD TO TURN in cylinder (worn tumbler). (2) Key works only in certain positions (worn electrical contacts). (3) Engine starts then stalls when key released from Start position (worn Run position contacts). (4) Engine stalls when hot (worn contacts losing tension when expanded). (5) Random electrical issues with accessories. (6) Steering wheel won’t unlock with key (cylinder lock seized). NEW PACIFICA 2017+: (1) Push-button doesn’t respond. (2) Smart key fob not detected. (3) ‘Key not detected’ message. (4) Intermittent no-start. (5) Smart key fob battery dead (replace fob battery first – common simple fix). Diagnose actual cause before replacement – sometimes smart key fob is the issue, not the vehicle ignition system.

Will my Original Pacifica key fit a New Pacifica?

NO, these are completely different vehicles with completely different security systems. Original Pacifica 2004-2008 used traditional physical keys cut to specific bitting pattern, with chip embedded in key head for PATS-style anti-theft. New Pacifica 2017+ uses smart key fobs with RFID transmitter, no physical key blade insertion for normal operation (emergency key blade hidden in fob for door lock override only). Different platforms, different anti-theft systems, completely incompatible. Parts from one Pacifica do not work on the other.

How do I install a new Pacifica push-button start?

Moderate work on New Pacifica 2017+: (1) Disconnect negative battery. (2) Access push-button location (dashboard or center console depending on year). (3) Remove trim/bezel to expose button assembly. (4) Disconnect electrical connector. (5) Remove mounting (clips or screws). (6) Install new button assembly. (7) Reconnect electrical. (8) Reassemble trim. (9) Connect battery. (10) Test push-button response. CAUTION: If replacing smart key reader module (separate from button), may require DEALER PROGRAMMING to register smart key fobs to new module via scan tool. Just replacing the button itself usually doesn’t require programming, but replacing the BCM-integrated key receiver may.

How does shipping work?

Free shipping to all 50 US states. Original Pacifica key cylinder/switch: lightweight, 0.5-1 lb in padded box. New Pacifica push-button assembly: 0.5-2 lbs depending on whether button alone or full assembly. UPS or FedEx Ground for US transit (3-7 days). Key cylinder protected to prevent tumbler damage during transit.
